The powerful England centre half made two critical errors during Wednesday's defeat against West Ham - both of which were punished with goals - and was eventually substituted at half-time.
Arsenal have revealed that he was given a day off from training and he will also be remaining in London while his team-mates head to St Andrews.
His absence will be keenly felt by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who is currently down to the bare bones of a defensive unit which has been cut to shreds by injuries in recent weeks.
Kerrea Gilbert had been filling in at the back but Wenger told the club's official website it is unlikely that he will be fit for Saturday's game and he is presently at a loss over what he should do to remedy the problem.
"Sol Campbell won't play," he declared. "I don't think Gilbert will be ready, so there is not a lot to choose from.
"I don't know what I'll do about it at the moment - I must think. Do I put Gilberto there or keep [Mathieu] Flamini at the back? I don't know.
"However, [Emmanuel] Adebayor could be involved and I may rest some players who have been involved in two hard games recently." don't be so naive la.....
