I consider u have the "loud speaker" and you have the "sound card" installed.  However, the problem might be no correct driver installed.  Therefore, check the system set-up and download an appropriate driver for it.  Of course, u may use the 'general' driver in Windows XP as well.  good luck and post again if necessary.
