Greatest Defensive Players in NBA history
Hey, this is the new selection.....Here are some players and some info/history for this players.....
let's choose who's the best defensive players in .. overall...
1) Bill Russell, Well, the greatest defensive Center all-time...... his defensive skill was great... 11th times NBA champs......... and 5 times MVPs.......... 2nd in rebounds/game in NBA history.... 1 all defensive team..... remember in early NBA history...they didn't count for steals and blocks....
2) Michael Jordan... everyone is talking about his offensive skills, but he is one of the top stealler(2nd) in NBA history, 4th in steals/games..... 1 defensive player of the year, 9th NBA all defensive team.....
3) Dennis Rodman, he could guard anyone in his generation, since he was draft in 2nd round in 86... he guarded Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Clyde Drexler, Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Hakeem, Shaq O'Neal.... 7th time all defensive team, 2 times defensive players of the yr.... his shooting skills was better than in his earliar career, until he was so upset as he got trade to Spurs in 94, personal problem+ he was thinking he was betrayed by Pistons managements, eg Don Nelson, was retired...
4) Clyde Drexler... similar to Mike... everyone is talking about his offensive skills in his generation... on the other hands, he was one of 3 NBA players who could get 3000 assists, 6000 rebounds and 20,000 pts... and he was in top 5 in steals when he was retired in 98, (6th in all time now ... leading reboundings for guards in his Portland's day.
5) John Stockton.. the stats shows everything... that he's the assists and steals leader in NBA history........... twice lead in steals in season.. 5-time in NBA defensive team
6) Sidney Moncrief, one of the greatest guard in Bucks history, 2 times NBA defensive plareys of the year, 4 time NBA all-defensive team... then you could know how crazy he was.... He's the first Bucks player to retire his no.
7) Michael Copper, when you looked at Showtimes in Lakers 80s, you may be wondering how they could win the champions if Lakers was attacking ONLY.... this is their defensive ace... he could guy Larry Bird... and stop everyone in defensively.. that's why Lakers could play fast-break so easily in 80s. 1 time defensive player of the yr, 2 time NBA all-defensive team
8) When we are talking about Spurs nowadays, we couldn't miss this guy, Bruce Bowen....
remember what he did to Kobe Bryant, Leborn James, T Mac...?! most of the greatest SG/SF was get in troubles when they play Spurs... especially this 6'8 player is guarding them...
9) Hakeem Olajuwon, Well, this center............ remember how he taught Shaq O'Neal in 95 finals? Before that, he was one of the top blockers in NBA .. all-time in NBA blocking history...!!! 2 time defensive player of the year and 5 time NBA all-defensive team.....

ahhahaa
great effort!
i still think it's Rodman (among these 9)
coz he's the one that can gaurd like 80% of players in the league
with great rebounding skills
for Russell: i havn't seen him play..
for MJ: i think he got advantage from the referees that the ref. won't blow the whistle in most 50-50 situations, an he gets a steal instead of a foul
for Drexler: again i missed his peak performance...
for Stockton: he's dirty (茅)
for Moncrief and Copper: i don't even know who they are...
for Bowen: he's my second choice among these 9, he works a lot on defence, great defensive awareness, we should learn from him, and he doesn't get Tech foul.........
for the Dream: he doen't give me a very tough image.......
Brightlee兄,
if u have time u may do a 2nd part of it
coz there are still lots of great def. players
like Pippen, Payton, Mu---bo, Artest, Iverson, Kirilenko, Ben Wallance....... 10) Gary Payton, nickname, the Glove, then you know he's a great stealler... 8th time NBA all-defensive team..... 5th in NBA all time in steals.. (up to today...)... 1 defensive player of the year.
11) Scottie Pippen, in Bulls Dynasty, he was the Bobin.... got 7 NBA all-defensive team, 40th in total rebounds, 4th in steals all times.... and got 6 champions.. wor.. you could see this great man on the floor....
12)Dikembe Mutumbo... Remember the biggest upset in NBA history.. when Seattle Sonics, the 1st seeds, was lost to the 8th seeds, Denver Nuggests in Playoffs?
Who was the starting center in Denver? Dikembe Mutumobo.. and he set a record in 5-games series... 31 block shots! leading 3 yrs in blocking, 93-95 (remember, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon were on their peak) 4 All-NBA defensive team, 3rd in block/game in all-time and 4th in blocks in NBA history.....
13) Ron Artest, another defensive small forward,.... see? this man was leading in steals/min in 02 season... in NBA all defensive team last year, of cos defensive player of the year last year too....
10th with all time NBA steals/game....... and He is one of the major players in Parces since 01.. look at the Pacers that without him..... .. you could know the different........!!
14) A.I, 6'0' 150pounds PG/SG... many people are mention his speed, his spirits.. but are there many people mentioning his defensive skills? 4th in NBA in steals this seasons, 3rd in steal/game....
Notice this: he is 3rd in NBA history that steals/game!!!
15)Kirilenko.... AK47, should we lists him to be small forward? power forward? or center? (due to his blocking ability this yr) leading block per game, and 8th in block this season.. got 2 games with 8 blocks shoot... remember he's white, he's 6'9.. and remember how's Jazz was playing before he got injury.......
16) Ben Wallace..... Big Ben.... 2 time all-defensive team, 2 times defensive player of the year... if you saw the final last yr.. everyone knows why Shaq got totally beaten...... even though he could score 30/ game in finals.... 1 of 4th players in NBA that he lead in block shoots and rebounds in same season..... Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace are the most defensive C/F system in NBA nowadays..... and he was the ONLY player in top 20 in steals/rebounds/blocks in 01... ONLY player in top 10 in steals/rebounds/blocks in 03-04.....

服!
the 標題's for you...in this version...
i think it's hard to choose among them......crazy....
Payton... besides his concentration, his trash talk defence works well, when his opponents got lost temeper, he took his ball or made him foul......
Pippen... remember in the NBA final series vs Jazz.... his defence shown critical.. remember that block + fast break dunk over Russell...
and then the block from behind when Shandon Anderson tried to dunk? crazy....
besides, he's brave against tall players, he always do double team, do u remember he got hit by Zo in East Final (?) and a HUGE ’樓’ appears on his forehead?
Mount Mun---bo... the series brightlee mentioned was memorable, everyone in the league tried to dunk in his face to build reputation at that time.... for sure few succeeded...
he's almost 40 now, and can still in average grab 4+ reb. and 1 block in 13 min. game time.......
Artest... once rated as the best perimeter defender after MJ and Pip., and that's quite true i think, he go for the ball everytime... which makes the opponents very hard to dribble, and his positioning's very well, the distance he kept between each opponent's great, and he could jump very fast, though he doesn't get lot of blocks, but he always put a hand in his opponents face.. and that's very enough for a perimeter defender..
man... i'm getting tired.....................
A.I.... he's always the answer... either on offence or defence, he goes for steals, and passes, coz he's lightening fast, his opponents found themselves in great pressure once they catch the ball (probably coz he's too short... if other takes a jumper.. it's over..)
he also made playoff record 9 steals in a game vs Hornets(?) few years ago..
The question is... is it possible to be the best offender in that year and the best defender at the same time?
the Answer is... A.I. did it in 00-01..
AK47... first of all what a great name... his long arm gives him great advantage over other players, and his timing's always perfect, he's not fast, but incredible timing....
one of the most all round defender in the league..
Big Ben... never been drafted by any NBA team.. but become the most reliable defense player in today's game, one of the main factors that Piston won last year..
though he's 6'9 only, but his body strength should be the best in the league, i think it's pretty scary to lay-up with him around...
man.... i really can't pick the best among them....................
i'm going mad...;)
well............
statistically there may be greater players (well arguably). But defense is all about concentration and making big play at the most crucial moment.
For that reason, I pick MJ for sure. must reply here then, just to get this topic back up top
haha(thx for "look duck up" me, brother brightlee)
to be very honest with u
i do not know alot abt "historic" players
for i'm a very green newbie in basketball watching
i remember reading something like this when i was still in highschool
after micheal jordan 2nd retirement (right b4 joining the wizards)(for i think when we wanna know who's best on "D" we should ask the greatest offensive player --- MJ)
quote: reporter : "Micheal, who was the best defender that you had to face in your career?"
MJ : "Joe Dumars"
at 6'3", MJ claims that Dumars was the one that gave him most trouble, i guess MJ wasn't at his prime when he played the 2 times nba champion, and mvp. or it took dumars less time to "bloom" b4 MJ did. (of coz now that we know Jordan ended up to be the greatest player ever)
i guess it has alot to do with his sportmanship that made the differences as well
although dumars one of the "Bad Boys", but i think it's mainly becoz of rodman and isiah thomas, yet he got the sportmanship award for 2 yrs i think
plus the bulls dynasty began AFTER the back to back champions of the Detriot Pistons
so i guess dumars was in MJ's way back then...haha
if jordan said he's good in D
i guess he's pretty darn good at denfense then(maybe it's one of those performance doesn't show on paper??? like didn't block MJ or steal the ball from him, but forced him to change his shots so that he missed or forced MJ some turnovers i guess) for the more recent players
i would have to pick AK and Matrix
Kirilenko...haha, i have to agree with the brothers here
man...he's white...well...german...still white...haha
but his timing on block/steal is nearly perfect, hardly fouls
unlike UncleBen and Mutumbo, they block alot, yet they also foul alot
his length is crazy as well, just like an "Advanced" version of Prince or...prince and camby combined!!!(length plus power, yet looks skinny)
Marion...sigh...if i ever get to choose who i wanna become in the nba, it must be him
his steals had topped this season that everyone knows
the more important part is that most of his steals turn out to be fast break pts or he starts the fast break himself
being able to steal the ball, then at the same moment "transforms" into a great passer or scorer...
man...
"greatest Defense is Offence", this is like the supreme verison of that saying
"greatest Defense is ending your defense with offence"...wow Kirilenko is RUSSIAN instead of German?????????????????????????? Joe Dumars..... em.. yes he's good in defense... as u said..... he's getting a great sportmanship.... a great plus, and a consistence defender.......!!
but if he compared with Isaish Thoams, Dennis Rodmans, John Salley, Bill Laimbeer.... then he was not the guys in "Bad Boys"
You may wonder Jordan didn't say Isaish was the good defender.....actually they had so many arguments before.... em... one of the rumours said ... NBA decided they didn't choose Isaish Thomas in Dream Team due to Jordan said he would not play in Dream Team if they selected Isaish....
Yes... Ak 47 is from Russian.. not German haha
my bad my bad
ak is from russia
sorri
haha
i guess MJ said that also becoz dumars was the one gurading him
both are 2 guards
i guess
but if mj said he's good
he must be good i guess....haha
and nba live is a good game...just bit slow these newer version
i love the dynasty mood tho
haha
i've traded J.Rose, roger maison jr and Dion glover for k-mart and nene
then nene and k -mart plus marshall for .....KING James and Z
and Z for okafor
haha
C: Bosh
F: Okafor
F: VC
G: King James
G: alston
of coz...wont' happen in real life
but hey, computer approved
so it's not that that impossible
(except NO one would release James...haha)
why can't i be the GM of toronto raptors???
(o^.^o) em at in the first dynasty of Bulls, Dennis Rodman/Isiah Thomas were guarding MJ.
hahah.. your first team in NBA live is strong.. in the starting lineup.. but the bench should be a weak one...
Originally posted by brightlee at 2005-2-14 06:21 PM:

haha
can't hide much from u
haha
yes...weak bench
mo pete
and the reminding of the real raptors rosters
but i signed korver, he got released...haha (but he's only 51 overall in that game)
(i love how they lowered the overall rating of everyone, more realitic)
who cares abt bench...starters are too out of the world
if i get that in real life
i'll be very very rich
coz think abt the number of jerseys and season tickets that i'll be able to sell
haha
