Patrice Evra is believed to prefer a move to Manchester United, although Internazionale have agreed a deal with Monaco for the full back.
The Frenchman is on Sir Alex Ferguson's wanted list to help fill the void left by Gabriel Heinze's knee injury and sources from the Principality claim Evra would jump at the chance to head for Old Trafford.
However, Inter are rumoured to have struck a deal with Monaco vice-chairman Gerard Brianti as the chase for the 24-year-old gathers pace.
Although under contract until 2008, Evra is keen to move on and his agent Federico Pastorello has admitted United and Inter are the clubs in the frame.
"Patrice wants to leave," Pastorello told France Football.
"There are two offers for him - from Manchester and Internazionale.
"He just hopes his officials can understand it is time for him to see something new, especially as Monaco are sure to earn money from him as he came for free from Nice."
Monaco would obviously like an auction to develop for the left back's services.

Monaco are resigned to losing Patrice Evra, with the France international tipped to seal a move to Manchester United by the weekend.
The Red Devils are jostling with Internazionale for the full back's signature, with Monaco reluctantly ready to sell Evra.
Inter have already offered €7.5 million (£5 million) to sign the 24-year-old at the end of the season, while United want to land Evra immediately.
Reports suggest the Premiership giants have put in a bid of €6 million (£4 million), which could eventually rise to €8 million (£5.5 million), in an effort to beat off Inter's interest.
Evra is understood to prefer a move to Old Trafford and sources in France are expecting a deal to be completed in the coming days.
The defender, who can also play on the left of midfield, is hankering after a transfer and his stance has seen him banished from the first team squad at Stade Louis II.
Monaco confirmed sanctions have been taken against Evra, but concede it would be futile trying to persuade the player to stay in the Principality.
"He will train all alone as long as his situation is not settled," said Monaco's sporting director Jean-Luc Ettori.
