Morten Gamst Pedersen could have been lining up for United in Wednesday night's Carling Cup semi-final, second leg after Sir Alex Ferguson revealed the club's previous interest in the winger.
United kept a close eye on the 24-year-old Blackburn star before he arrived at Ewood Park.
But the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as the emergence of Kieran Richardson meant the Reds never followed up their interest in the Norwegian.
"We saw him play and had some good reports on him," proclaimed Fergie.
"But at the time we didn't think he was what we wanted because we'd just signed Ronaldo and we also had Giggs and Richardson coming through.
"Sometimes that happens, you may see players who take your eye but you might be already overloaded in that particular position. So you don't anything about it.
"The boy seems to have made his reputation against us," joked the Boss, referring to Pedersen's three goals against United this season.
"He's a good striker of the ball with two good feet and his goal at Ewood Park in the first leg was absolutely fantastic. We'll need to be aware of him on Wednesday night."
"Blackburn will get stuck right into us, therfore, our attitude and intent to win the match has got to be paramount."

United go into the match at Old Trafford on the back of their last-gasp victory over Liverpool thanks to Rio Ferdinand's header in the dying seconds.
"It looked like it was going to finish 0-0," admitted Fergie. "Liverpool had set their stall out to get the draw in the last 20 minutes, whereas we were trying to win it.
"It was fantastic to get the late goal and it's great to get that back into the club because scoring in the last minute is something we used to do regularly.
"After a great result against Liverpool, we must now make sure we win this semi-final against Blackburn," insisted the United manager. [color=Blue][b]"It'll be a hard game but another 1-0 win will do me fine.[/b][/color]
"Blackburn are a strong, physical team who are very hard to beat. They'll be aiming to make it a difficult night for us, but difficulty can comes in many shapes and forms and sometimes you can make it hard for yourself.
"Our attitude and intent to win the match has therefore got to be paramount. It's a good opportunity for us and we'll play a strong team which will hopefully get us through."
Both sides are missing key players for the clash. United have confirmed that Paul Scholes will miss the rest of the season with an eye problem, while Ji-sung Park (knee) is still out. John O'Shea is doubtful after injuring a rib against Liverpool and Cristiano Ronaldo will sit out his final game of his three-match ban.
Blackburn, meanwhile, will be without the services of striker Paul Dickov who injured his shoulder in Rovers' 1-0 win at Newcastle at the weekend.

All five United youngsters played in Antwerp's 1-0 home defeat on Saturday but, as ever, Meulensteen sees the positives in such adversity - an opportunity for the lads to show their resolve.
"They all need time to settle in. They've had a couple of poor results lately but again it's an experience to straighten their backs, concentrate on the task ahead of them and make it work.
"That's what it's all about, in football and in life. They're all there and chipping away, and hopefully they can get some good results over the next few weeks which will lift their spirits."

[color=Red]Manchester United have made an official approach to Milan for their Swiss international Johann Vogel, according to reports in Italy.[/color]
The Premiership club have been in the market for a midfielder ever since the departure of Roy Keane to Celtic.
While it was initially thought that Gennaro Gattuso was at the top of Sir Alex Ferguson’s hit list, it has since emerged that Vogel is the player to have caught the Scotsman’s eye.
Vogel was made Switzerland captain at the tender age of 22 and his distribution and leadership qualities are exactly the criteria United are looking for in an area that has under-performed this season.
The Geneva-born 27-year-old has found first-team appearances limited at the San Siro outfit, having started only three Serie A matches for the Rossoneri since joining from PSV Eindhoven in the summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he considered bringing Morten Gamst Pedersen to Manchester United.
The Blackburn Rovers winger was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford during his Tromso days but Graeme Souness made him one of his last signings at Ewood Park instead.
Pedersen followed up a matchwinning brace in Rovers' 2-1 win at United last September, United's only home defeat of the season, with a spectacular strike in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final between the two sides.
The thumping drive secured a 1-1 draw from the first leg, setting up a tight battle in the return game on Wednesday night, live on Sky Sports 1.
"We saw him play and had some good reports on him," said Ferguson of the 24-year-old.
"But, at the time, we didn't think he was what we wanted because we'd just signed [Cristiano] Ronaldo and we also had [Ryan] Giggs, and [Kieran] Richardson coming through.
"Sometimes that happens, you may see players who take your eye but you might already be overloaded in that particular position.
"So you don't do anything about it," he told United's official website.

Paul Scholes' career could be over because of a serious eye problem that has already ruled him out for the rest of the season. The Manchester United midfielder went to see a top Harley Street surgeon in London on Monday. He was told pressure behind one eye was the cause of the trouble and it would be dangerous to play football again until everything was sorted out. Even then, surgeons could tell him that future contact sport would be inadvisable.
