Manchester United have recalled Richie Jones from his loan spell at Royal Antwerp in order to ease their midfield troubles.
Sir Alex Ferguson has seen a number of key midfielders pick up knocks in recent weeks, with Paul Scholes ruled out for the season due to an eye condition, John O'Shea out with broken ribs and Ryan Giggs struggling with a hamstring complaint.
With Roy Keane having left the club, Ferguson is being forced to use youngsters Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson in the engine room.
The Scot has used up his January kitty in landing defenders Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic, which has prompted him to recall Jones from Antwerp after missing out on a couple of loan signings.
"We have been trying to bring someone in but it is very difficult," said Ferguson.
"Ideally, we wanted to get someone on loan but we have exhausted that avenue and it is looking very unlikely anything will happen now.
"We are recalling Richie Jones from Antwerp to give us some back-up, but he is only young and we would have preferred someone with more experience."

Milan have rejected Manchester United's bid to sign Johann Vogel.
As revealed on skysports.com last week United made a move to bring Vogel to Old Trafford as they look to ease their midfield problems.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is desperate to bolster his midfield after losing Paul Scholes for the rest of the season through injury.
Ryan Giggs and John O'Shea have both joined the casualty list at United leaving Ferguson short of options in midfield.
Milan claim United approached them about Vogel's availability, but they insist they have no plans to let the Swiss international leave.
"It is true United want to take him in the winter transfer window but we are not planning to sell at this time," Milan general manager Ariedo Braida told the News of the World.
"We have an excellent relationship with Sir Alex and the United board but we told them we want to keep Vogel for now.
"I don't know what might happen in the summer."

英格蘭足總就費格遜對加利尼維爾被起訴評擊足總一事作出回應。
曼聯在最後一分鐘入球以一比零擊敗利物浦，賽後於場外發生小騷亂。
在奧脫福球場裏面，作客球迷區域的洗手間被破壞，而在停車場亦有部份車輛遭破壞。
不過，英足總發言人表示，加利尼維爾對此事需要負上部份責任。
「大曼徹斯特警方表示，他相信加利尼維爾的慶祝動作，是導致該些事件的部份起因。」足總發言人說。
「而我們亦收到了球證的報告，因此才決定採取行動。」
加利尼維爾在二月十日前可以作出回應，不過費格遜表示他們未必會對此上訴，因為他恐怕曼聯會遭到雙重標準的對待。
「足總的行動就好像只聽傳媒去擺佈。」費格遜說。

The Welsh veteran limped out of United's Carling Cup semi-final win over Blackburn on Wednesday, raising fears that he would become the latest victim of the injury jinx that has decimated Sir Alex Ferguson's midfield.
However, Sir Alex revealed at his weekly press conference: "It's nothing long term. Ryan's hamstring just felt a bit tight against Blackburn. He should be back in about 10 days."
Patrice Evra was also withdrawn from the action against Mark Hughes' side with a slight groin problem, but Sir Alex expects his new signing to be available for this weekend's FA Cup trip to Wolves.
"The Scot also received a timely boost as both Ji-sung Park and Cristiano Ronaldo are set to be available for the Molineux clash - Park after recovering from medial knee ligament damage and Ronaldo after completing a three-game ban.
"They give us good options," explained the Boss. "I'll have to assess what's the best side to play.
"I've got to think about bringing freshness into the team because we travel to Blackburn next Wednesday and then play Fulham the following Saturday.
The name of the game is to be in the hat for the next round and that's what we'll be aiming to do."
Sir Alex is not expecting an easy ride against the four-time FA Cup winners who are unbeaten in their last five League and Cup games.
"They're very strong defensively," said Fergie who was a regular visitor to Molineux when his son Darren was on the Wolves books.
"Reading and Sheffield United look like being the two who will go up, but Wolves are in a good position to challenge for the play-offs."
Aside from being the sixth FA Cup meeting between the two clubs, the match will also pair ex-United midfielder Paul Ince will his old club.
"I'll have a quiet word with Incey!" joked Fergie who recently met up with Ince at a charity event. "He's a really good character who won't be fazed by Sunday's game. Others may be but he won't."
