Kaizer Chiefs 0-1 Man United

Dong Fangzhou spared Manchester United's blushes at Newlands with a late winner which handed the Red Devils an undeserved victory over the Kaizer Chiefs.

As they prepare to sell one of the most prolific goalscorers in their history, United looked set to draw a dismal blank in the second game of their South African tour.

Although the club have rejected strong rumours a deal has been done to sell Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid, it seems only a matter of time before the 30-year-old - one of only eight players to score 150 goals for the club - relocates to the Bernabeu.

And, on tonight's evidence, he will take some replacing.

For, with Louis Saha and Wayne Rooney still on summer leave, a bid for Fernando Torres on hold and neither Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nor Giuseppe Rossi looking anything like as convincing as they did against the Orlando Pirates at the weekend, United were largely impotent in front of goal.

A disappointing performance, made worse by a nasty-looking injury to Kieran Richardson, was summed up 15 minutes from time when Ryan Giggs drilled a low cross to the far post.

It should have presented half-time substitute Dong Fangzhou with a tap-in. Instead, Paul Scholes slid in front of his young team-mate and turned the ball wide of an open goal.

Thankfully for United, Dong did not let his obvious disappointment linger and, after Darren Fletcher skipped to the by-line six minutes from time, steadied himself to fire an eight-yard effort high into the Chiefs net.

Rated as one of the brightest prospects in his native China, Dong has spent his entire two-year stint at United on loan at feeder club Royal Antwerp.

He did turn out for the Red Devils on their filter-074 tour 12 months ago but, unable to get a UK work permit, Dong remains in exile, where he will return once more when United's current tour draws to a close on Saturday.

Dong saved what was a shoddy display for a United side showing just a single change to the one which did so well against the Orlando Pirates at the weekend.

Teenage full-back Danny Simpson was handed a taste of senior action in place of Phil Bardsley and the Salford-born defender had a relatively quiet time of it in the opening stages too as the Chiefs appeared to target United's left-hand side, where Patrice Evra was stationed.

Evra has endured a difficult introduction to life at Old Trafford following his £5million move from Monaco last January and hardly looked confident as the Chiefs pressed in those early minutes.

However, gradually Evra began to warm to his task, which was just as well really given the amount of possession the hosts enjoyed.

Jimmy Tau was a particular thorn in United's flesh, swinging over a series of decent crosses from the right, even if the Chiefs' only shot of note was a long-range effort from Gert Schalwkwyk which Ben Foster dealt with easily.

Foster continues to impress on his introduction to the Red Devils' ranks and he offered Simpson a Peter Schmeichel-like lecture when the youngster got in his way as he came to collect a cross.

With Scholes and Ryan Giggs off the pace in central midfield, United's attacking impetus was badly affected.

Rossi miscued a diving header, while Solskjaer, fresh from his two-goal salvo in Durban, blazed over twice in quick succession as the visitors struggled to make any impact.

Dong replaced Solskjaer at the interval and the introduction of the young China international seemed to spark United into life.

Scholes saw a piledriver deflected wide and Dong brought a good save out of Rowen Fernandez, who had been virtually unemployed during the opening period.

Fernandez also saved acrobatically from Rossi on the hour mark, although by that time Richardson had departed with what looked like a painful ankle injury sustained as he landed after being on the end of a forceful sliding tackle by Chiefs skipper Cyril Nzama.

Richardson was still in agony as he was helped to the touchline and it did not take long to rule the England international out of the game, ensuring United's victory left a sour taste.

Real apologise for Van Nistelrooy website blunder

MADRID, July 18 (Reuters) - Real Madrid have apologised for a blunder that made a profile of Ruud van Nistelrooy appear briefly on their website as if the Manchester United striker had signed for the club.

The Primera Liga side blamed the gaffe to a computer error but it fuelled speculation that the 30-year-old Dutch striker has already agreed to move to Spain.

'The club would like to clarify that Realmadrid.com compile different reports, news stories and profiles of players that might join the club, including one on the Dutchman but they are merely for internal use,' Real said in a statement.

'This profile appeared on the club website for a few minutes because of a computer error, but such pieces are normally only published after the official announcement of a deal between the two clubs.

'Real would like to apologise for any misunderstanding caused by the error.'

Spanish media have reported that Van Nistelrooy will sign a three-year deal with Real for a fee of around £10million, but Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said on Tuesday that his club would not be selling the player cheaply.

Van Nistelrooy joined United for a then British record of £19million in 2001.

Van Nistelrooy to sign for Real Madrid on Wednesday

Ruud van Nistelrooy seems set to seal his move from Manchester United to Real Madrid tomorrow.

Although neither club are making any comment on the striker, rumours are circulating that the 30-year-old will have a medical in the Spanish capital on Wednesday.

If the speculation is correct, United have presumably reached a compromise over the fee after Sir Alex Ferguson suggested the Red Devils would demand £15million for the former PSV Eindhoven star.

Although Bayern Munich and a number of Premiership clubs had expressed interest in Van Nistelrooy, one of only eight players in United history to score 150 goals for the club, Real were always his favoured option.

With star striker Ronaldo sidelined after opting to return to Brazil for a knee operation, new Real coach Fabio Capello needed a proven goalscorer and earlier this week expressed his admiration for the player.

Providing Van Nistelrooy comes through his medical with no problems, it is anticipated he will be unveiled at some point in the next 24 hours and be reunited again with David Beckham after spending two successful years with the former England skipper before his own move to Madrid.

However, sources close to United cast doubt on the reports, privately claiming there had been no deal with Madrid and that Van Nistelrooy was still officially a Red Devils player.

Sir Alex admits Juve interest
United are considering bids for at least one Juventus player, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Juve's demotion to Serie B for match-fixing has left the future of their top stars cloaked in confusion, with a number of Europe's top clubs set to offer them escape routes from the Stadio Delle Alpi.

When asked about United's lack of transfer activity this summer, Sir Alex admitted: "We're working on several things and talking to several clubs. We have made several enquiries for several players but we have held certain things back because of the Juventus situation.

"I think everybody will be looking at all the Juventus players. Vieira, Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Thuram and Emerson are the ones that people will be focusing on.

"Now we know where we're going in terms of making inquiries and maybe definite offers for one or two players."

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Tottenham Hotspur have rejected a bid for Michael Carrick, while United have also turned down a bid from Real Madrid for Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Ferguson is searching for a new midfielder, as he looks to find a long-term replacement for Roy Keane.

Tottenham admitted last month that United had tabled a bid for Carrick, but that they had rejected the bid out of hand.

Ferguson is a big admirer of the former West Ham United man and is thought to be weighing up a new move for the classy midfielder.

"We are trying to sign another central midfielder," said Ferguson.

"We have made a bid for Michael Carrick, but they (Tottenham) turned it down."

Ferguson also hinted that he could make a move for Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira.

The Old Trafford chief is monitoring the fall-out at Juventus following their relegation from Serie A and is ready to move for some of their top stars.

Ferguson is a big fan of Vieira and has tried to sign him in the past.

"We have to see what Juventus are planning for their players," added Ferguson.

"Vieira, (Fabio) Cannavaro and (Gianluca) Buffon are all top players and there are question marks about where they are going next season."

Ferguson also moved to quell speculation that van Nistelrooy was on the verge of a move to Real Madrid.

Van Nistelrooy handed in a transfer request last week and revealed he has his heart set on a switch to the Spanish capital.

Reports emanating from Spain suggested a deal could soon be completed, but Ferguson insists any move is still a way off after turning down Real's offer for the Dutchman.

"There is no agreement with Real Madrid and Manchester United over Ruud," said Ferguson.

"We have refused their offer. He remains a Manchester United player."

It seems likely that a move will go through, with Real keen to sign the former PSV Eindhoven ace and van Nistelrooy determined to move to El Santiago Bernabeu.
