Juve down, Milan lifeline

The Italian appeals court confirmed on Tuesday that demoted Juventus will start next season in Serie B but reduced the penalty points imposed on the club for their involvement in a match-fixing scandal from -30 points to -17. AC Milan have been reinstated in the UEFA Champions League but must go through the early qualifying phases.

New Carrick contract?

Tottenham Hotspur are set to offer Michael Carrick a 4-year deal worth £50,000 a week to make him the joint highest paid player at Tottenham in line with Captain Ledley King in a quest to ward off any more offers from Manchester United.

Tottenham have rejected a £10 million bid from United and reportedly value the player between £15 and £20 million, which Man United are reluctant to agree with.

Pique enjoying Spanish charge
Gerard Piqué is delighted to have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European U19 Championship with Spain.

The young United centre-back scored two powerful headers in his side's 4-0 win over Scotland on Thursday, and seven points from three games saw the Spanish advance to the last four as Group B winners.

The two-time champions notched 10 goals in their three group games, and Piqué admitted to the official UEFA website: "It’s certainly interesting, in the first match [a 5-3 win against Turkey] the team was a little nervous and it was our first game together since the end of May.

"But we started well and, although we were lacking a little sharpness and there are things we can improve, as we play more games we will get getter and better."

Piqué, who was rested for the incidental draw against Portugal on Sunday night, is thriving on the strain and prestige of playing for his country.

"I'm very proud," he said. "To represent Spain is a feeling you cannot explain. Every match you have to give everything and if you play well you can be proud of yourself. If you don’t play well, you have to do better next time because it’s important for you and important for your country.

"The most important thing is how to play under pressure. You are under pressure to win every match, to reach the semi-finals, to reach the final, to win the tournament.

"In top-level football, you have to learn how to cope with such pressure and to play for the result."

Spain will face Austria on Wednesday afternoon in Wronki, Poland, while the other semi-final pits Scotland against the Czech Republic.

Hooray!!scoring two goals...cant wait to see him playing at Man U and making a partnership with Rio~~

Tottenham are resigned to losing Michael Carrick to Manchester United after the England midfielder rejected their final contract offer.
Spurs would have altered their wage and bonus structure to match the package offered by United but Carrick has made it clear that he wants to move, pointing to the Old Trafford club's participation in the Champions League and their greater proximity to his family home in Newcastle as key attractions.

Tottenham's manager, Martin Jol, will not attempt any further to dissuade the midfielder, whose rejections of contract offers and declaration of intent to move to United are being regarded as tantamount to a transfer request that will cost him compensation for the remaining two years of his contract. Jol allowed Pedro Mendes, Michael Brown and Sean Davis to leave in January
and must now recruit a midfield replacement.

Papers: Carrick set for move
Carrick Crunch
Michael Carrick is stalling on a bumper new £45,000-a-week deal to stay at Spurs. The England midfielder wants to wait and see if Manchester United come back with a new bid. Spurs KO’d United’s £14million offer and want to open talks to secure Carrick’s long-term future. Carrick - who is 25 on Friday - has two years left on the £25,000-a-week deal he signed after his £2.75m move from West Ham in August 2004. Carrick is still eager to try his luck at United but fears Spurs’ £20m valuation has put them off.
Mark Irwin, The Sun

Other tabloids aren't convinced, however, with the Daily Mirror among those claiming that Carrick will stay in London because of United's reluctance to pay Spurs' asking price.

If Carrick does arrive, he may be followed up north by Spurs team-mate Jermaine Defoe, according to the Daily Star, following the news that Fernando Torres is staying with Atletico Madrid.

The Sun also reports Sir Alex Ferguson's surprise and delight to see Alan Smith back in training after his horrific injury. Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy may turn out for United in Thursday's friendly at Hyde United.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists that the club are not in a "desperate" situation despite being unable to bring any new faces to Old Trafford this summer.

The Red Devils still seem short of top-quality options in midfield and moves for various targets have stalled since the likes of Michael Ballack, Mahamadou Diarra and Michael Carrick were considered as potential signings over the past months.

Ferguson is refusing to be unsettled by the lack of incoming movement and feels the fans will feel the same way if the current squad, fortified by the return of the likes of Paul Scholes, Alan Smith and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, remain fit.

"We're working on certain things," he told Sky Sports News. "Of course, the media try and make it into a desperate situation.

"If I were to start the season with all the players I've got available, all fit, I don't think the supporters would be disappointed - neither would I."

Doubts remain that Ruud van Nistelrooy will stay at the club but the Dutchman is still a United player despite Bayern Munich and Real Madrid's attempts to snap him up.

"None at all," Ferguson replied when asked if there was a change in the situation regarding the striker. "At this moment in time, without question [he's still a United player].

"He trained well yesterday. He had a good attitude to his training, which is good, therefore he's a United player."
