Sir Alex Ferguson is in talks with Argentina World Cup star Javier Mascherano. Fergie believes he has finally found the man to replace Roy Keane and Mascherano's agents arrived last night to filter-004 a move to Manchester United. The defensive midfielder is valued at £25million by Corinthians, but United are expected to make the Brazilian club an opening offer of £16m. Mascherano, who was in outstanding form for his country in Germany, looked to be on the way to Real Madrid for £25m until the Spaniards pulled out following elections for a new club president - opening the door for United. The investment company behind Corinthians bought Mascherano from River Plate for £10m two years ago and the key to the move is how much profit they want from his sale. Tottenham are resigned to losing Michael Carrick to Manchester United after the England midfielder rejected their final contract offer.
Spurs would have altered their wage and bonus structure to match the package offered by United but Carrick has made it clear that he wants to move, pointing to the Old Trafford club's participation in the Champions League and their greater proximity to his family home in Newcastle as key attractions.
Tottenham's manager, Martin Jol, will not attempt any further to dissuade the midfielder, whose rejections of contract offers and declaration of intent to move to United are being regarded as tantamount to a transfer request that will cost him compensation for the remaining two years of his contract. Jol allowed Pedro Mendes, Michael Brown and Sean Davis to leave in January and must now recruit a midfield replacement.

The two sides have enjoyed a fruitful relationship in recent seasons, with the Premiership giants regularly sending their young players over to Belgium to gain first-team experience.
For the coming campaign, [color=Blue][b]Dong Fangzhuo, Jonny Evans, Fraizer Campbell, Danny Simpson and Darron Gibson[/b][/color] are due to play for Antwerp.
China international Fangzhuo has spent the past few seasons with Antwerp as he is currently unable to play in England.
Though he featured on United's pre-season tour of South Africa, Fangzhuo can not play a competitive game for the club until he either qualifies for a work permit or European passport.
Left back Simpson spent the second half of last term with Antwerp, while Campbell and Gibson will be undertaking their first loan spells away from Old Trafford.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson recently confirmed his intention to dispatch several younger members of his squad on loan and has now decided the quintet will benefit from a stint with Antwerp.
Meanwhile, teenage midfielder Gibson has played down suggestions from Ferguson that he could represent Northern Ireland in the future.
Ferguson has tipped Gibson and Evans to become cornerstones of the Northern Ireland side, but he will pledge his international allegiance to the Republic.
