Both teams fielded weakened sides for the first meeting between the two nations in 11 years and England didn't wait long to jump on their American counterparts.
Richardson got his first goal in the fourth minute on a beautiful left-footed free kick from just outside the area past a helpless Kasey Keller.
The Americans had their chances after that, but England did well to contain the game in midfield and prevent the USA from using their pace to march forward.
Joe Cole had the best chance for England, briskly moving in from the right side and hooking a shot towards the far post that forced a superb save from a diving Keller.
Richardson made the Americans pay for missed chances just before the break, tapping in with his right foot on a loose ball in the area in the 44th minute for a 2-0 lead, silencing a crowd of 47,637 spectators at Soldier Field.
The USA took it to England in the second half, outshooting their opponents 9-3 in the last 45 and finally getting one past David James in the 79th minute.
Landon Donovan's free kick from the left fell into space in front of the net, allowing Carlos Bocanegra to get a boot to it. James parried his effort, but the ball fell to Clint Dempsey who tucked it past James for his first career USA goal in his sixth game.
The Americans had a chance to level the match, but Conor Casey could not gather control of the ball in the area before Zat Knight put the ball behind for a corner kick.
England will next be in action on Tuesday against Colombia in a friendly while the Americans next match is a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica in Salt Lake City on June 4.

傑斯經過半年與曼聯的談判，終於與球會續約兩年。
另外，門將侯活亦與曼聯續約。
原本傑斯的合約在2006年暑假便結束，曼聯一直以規例說明過三十歲球員只能與球會續約一年為由，拒絕給予傑斯兩年合約，但在週一，傑斯終於令曼聯改變初衷，能夠與球會續約半年。
因此，傑斯將會至少效力曼聯至2008年。
另外，門將侯活亦已經與球會續約，合約將在2009年才結束。
這兩個消息相信可以令曼聯在足總杯對阿仙奴前充喜。
「傑斯是一個了不起的球員，已經在曼聯效力了十三年，他將可以留在這裏二十年，或許在曼聯退休。」費格遜說。
「而侯活亦是一位出色的年青門將，他將可以在這裏吸取更多的經驗。」
而傑斯對能夠續約感到十分高興︰「我一直都想留在曼聯，我高興能夠與球會續約。」
而侯活亦表示，他十分樂意留效曼聯。
「我十分享受在曼聯的生活，而且每一天都是在學習的。」侯活說。
「這裏的球迷實在了不起，我很樂意留在這裏。」
