MICHAEL OWEN has run out of patience at Real Madrid and is ready to come home.[/color]
The England striker's advisers have made inquiries to gauge the level of interest at Manchester United and Liverpool, Mirror Sport can reveal.
Owen, 25, has tired of playing second fiddle to Ronaldo in Spain.
And with Real set to sign at least one more forward over the summer, his opportunities next season will again be limited.
Newcastle and Blackburn have already stepped in with offers, but were dismissed out of hand by Owen, who has made it known he is interested only in Old Trafford or Anfield.
It emerged yesterday that Liverpool were thinking over the prospect of a loan deal for the player they sold in August for £8m.
The idea is being driven by the Anfield board, but it appears manager Rafael Benitez is not particularly keen, and would prefer to press ahead with attempts to sign Southampton striker Peter Crouch.
And Madrid may take some persuading to loan out a player they could use in part-exchange as they pursue another frontman.
Real would prefer to sell rather than loan, and have set Owen's price at the £18m.
That is more than Liverpool could pay, leaving Owen's best hope of a return home seeming to rest with Manchester United, who expressed some interest.
But with Sir Alex Ferguson chasing a top-class midfielder, Owen's asking price may be a stumbling block.
United might be forced to splash out on the sort of player Ferguson is after. Michael Ballack is available from Bayern Munich, and while he has only a year left on his contract, he could still cost close to £15m.
If that is the case, it would rule out a massive bid for Owen.
But if Real can be talked into cutting their price and Ferguson is able to secure a central midfielder for a reasonable figure, United would definitely be interested in Owen.
Madrid may be open to a swap deal involving Ruud van Nistelrooy, who would be allowed to leave Old Trafford if the finances worked out.
Cash plus Owen in exchange for the Holland striker would be likely to clinch the deal for Real.
Now Owen has made his position clear, there could be some serious negotiations over the next few weeks.
Owen is expected to speak to Madrid president Florentino Perez during the club's tour of America, which got under way yesterday.
Luis Figo will also be heading to England, after finally persuading Real to allow him to go to Liverpool on a free. The deal had stalled after Madrid initially demanded a £2m transfer fee.
