Villarreal 2 - 1 Everton

Everton's association with the Champions League was a brief one - but they came close to taking this tie into extra-time.

With the scores level at 1-1 in tonight's game, Duncan Ferguson headed in an 81st-minute effort which would have squared up the aggregate scores and taken the game to extra-time - but referee Pierluigi Collina ruled it out for an infringement by Marcus Bent.

• Moyes proud of troops

It was harsh on David Moyes' men, although they needed the heroics of Nigel Martyn to keep their hopes alive.

There is a growing glamour for the 39-year-old shot-stopper to be recalled to the England squad as back-up to Paul Robinson.

It is difficult to argue with his growing band of his supporters as he somehow managed to reduce the Spanish side to two goals.

Mikel Arteta found the target for Everton with an expertly executed free-kick - but another goal failed to materialise despite a valiant late effort.

The damage had been done at Goodison Park two weeks ago when they suffered a 2-1 defeat in this third qualifying round tie.

Everton had a good chance of making the breakthrough in the 17th minute when Ferguson flicked on a long throw from Phil Neville.

Tim Cahill escaped his marker but his header carried little power and was comfortably saved by Mariano Barbosa.

Just when Everton appeared to be taking control Villarreal broke away to score and extend their lead to 3-1 on aggregate.

Juan Pablo Sorin raced forward and powered in a shot which took a deflection off captain David Weir to leave Martyn wrong-footed in the 20th minute.

Martyn then did well to prevent Everton going further behind with a marvellous full length save from Diego Forlan's thunderbolt in the 24th minute.

Everton found themselves under pressure again in the 29th minute when Weir let in Birmingham discard Luciano Figueroa.

However Kevin Kilbane showed good awareness to get back and cover to clear the ball to safety.

Everton were looking a bit disjointed after losing that goal and the confidence seemed to have been knocked out of one or two players.

In contrast Forlan, such a disappointment at Manchester United, looked in good form in the first half.

He cleverly got away from Joseph Yobo and rattled in a shot from 20 yards but Martyn was equal to it and made a superb parry.

Martyn made another impressive save in the 39th minute when he somehow got a hand to a curling free-kick from the inspirational Juan Roman Riquelme.

It was one-way traffic and Everton's evergreen shot-stopper again managed to deny Riquelme a minute later.

Moyes' men would have been glad to have heard the half-time whistle given the pressure they had been under.

Everton knew they would need something special to turn this tie on its head and Bent had a half-chance in the 48th minute.

However he failed to test Villarreal goalkeeper Barbosa, scuffing a shot wide of the target.

There was a moment of danger for Everton in the 50th minute when Gonzalo released Forlan and he homed in on goal. However Martyn stood tall to block his effort.

Everton then hit back on the counter but Ferguson headed wide from a good position following a cross from Simon Davies.

It was a brief respite, though, with Martyn blocking shots from Riquelme and Marcos Senna in quick succession.

Everton boss Moyes made his first change in 56th minute, bringing on Leon Osman for the tiring Kilbane.

Weir was handily placed in the 60th minute and made a vital block as Rodolfo Arrubarrena swept in a cross intended for Figueroa at the back post.

Everton were running out of time and their large band of travelling fans had gone strangely quiet.

However the game took on a different picture in the 70th minute when Arteta pulled Everton level on the night with a stunning free-kick from 20 yards.

Everton almost drew level on aggregate in the 74th minute but Cahill's cross came back off the bar with Barbosa beaten.

Barbosa then somehow managed to tip over a goalbound header from Ferguson in the 80th minute as they stepped up the pressure.

Then came the moment when Ferguson had the ball in the net - but Collina saw an infringement by Marcus Bent and disallowed the effort.

And, with Everton pushing men forward, Forlan secured Villarreal's passage in stoppage-time when he swept in Sorin's cross.

• Moyes proud of brave Toffees

Everton boss David Moyes was pleased with his side's performance despite the 4-2 aggregate defeat to Villarreal in their Champions League qualifier.

The Toffeemen will now play in the UEFA Cup after defeat to their Spanish opponents, although they had a goal disallowed which could have sent the tie to extra-time.

Moyes told ITV2: 'We played a very good team. We had to carry bits of luck, we always knew we had to score two goals and we came very close.

'I am really pleased with the lads - they gave their all.'

Duncan Ferguson was denied the crucial goal, and Moyes was disappointed with decisions from referee Pierluigi Collina.

'Maybe it's new to us and we need to understand more. I was told referees would be the same in Europe as they were in England,' Moyes said.

He added: 'We are disappointed we are out but must not forget the achievement of getting here - so know we get a chance of the UEFA Cup and we would have settled for that at the start of last season.'

Goalkeeper Nigel Martyn took no comfort from his outstanding performance, adding on ITV1: 'It counts for nothing, we are a big team together and everyone played extremely well. We created our chances but didn't put them away.

'We created chances and scored what looked a perfectly good goal - we are hugely disappointed.'

Forlan added: 'It was a difficult game, we knew they would try to win the game and it was difficult - the disallowed goal was a help for us.

Moyes blames Collina as Everton's dream ends

Moyes blames Collina as Everton's dream ends

Top referee Pierluigi Collina was at the centre of controversy as Everton's association with the Champions League ended in heartache.

The Italian official chalked off Duncan Ferguson's header in the 80th minute for an infringement involving his team-mate Marcus Bent.

Bent, who shrugged off an ankle injury to play, was adjudged to be guilty of barging as the ball came in.

Had the goal stood it would have levelled the scores up in this third qualifying round game against Villarreal.

Everton manager David Moyes could not disguise his anger at the decision.

'It was a definite goal by us,' he said after the 4-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of the Spanish side.

'At the time you have to trust the referee to make the right decision. But he has not made the right decision.

'To get that chalked off was not right. He made a big mistake.

'Our first objective was to get the tie back to level but we were denied that chance.'

Ferguson's effort came after some sustained pressure from Everton which saw a superb equaliser from Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill's cross rattle the bar.

But by pushing men forward they were left exposed at the back and Diego Forlan wrapped things up by sweeping home a cross from Juan Pablo Sorin.

With a 2-1 deficit to try and overturn from the first leg, Everton were dealt a hammer blow when Sorin made the breakthrough, his shot from distance taking a deflection off David Weir.

Cahill should have given Everton the lead earlier, however, sending a tame header into the arms of Mariano Barbosa from close range.

Goalkeeper Nigel Martyn made a string of superb saves before Arteta pulled the sides level with a superb free-kick.

But Everton could not kick on and will now participate in the UEFA Cup instead of the lucrative stages of the Champions League.

Moyes saluted his players for the way they rallied against a team that finished third in the Spanish League last season.

'I told them that if they were going to go out they had to make sure our supporters knew they had done everything possible to be in it,' he said.

'I appreciate the fans' support, they came in their thousands. We were unlucky not to have taken the game into extra time.

'It was a real tough game and I am proud of the way my players responded.'

Ferguson was right out of luck. A minute before his effort was disallowed, Barbosa made a breathtaking save from his header, pushing the ball over the bar.

Moyes added: 'I cannot say we were the better team on the night but we were always in the match.

'We lost a goal to a deflection and that deflated us for a while after a bright start.

'Then there was a scramble right at the end but no-one was able to get a touch when we needed it.'

Sanguine Sir Alex ready for Champs League draw

Sanguine Sir Alex ready for Champs League draw

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will sit back and accept his Champions League fate this afternoon when the Red Devils learn who their latest group foes will be.

The presence of Real Betis, Udinese and Villarreal among the lower-ranked sides in this season's competition has brought an increased sense of danger for Europe's heavyweights.

But experience has taught Ferguson not to bother poring through the list of potential opponents.

'Over the years I have thought `I hope we get this team or I hope we don't get them',' he said.

'But in the end, it doesn't really matter. You never get everything you want anyway, so you might as well just accept what you get.'

United cruised into the last 32 with a second successive 3-0 triumph over Hungarian champions Debrecen.

The victory came at a heavy price though with the loss of Gary Neville for up to five weeks after the veteran full-back picked up a groin injury just 10 minutes into the contest.

It was the type of setback Ferguson feared on a heavy pitch, the same one Wes Brown sustained a broken ankle on three years ago.

Having let Neville's brother Phil join Everton, Ferguson must decide whether to draft Brown or John O'Shea into the vacant slot for Sunday's Barclays Premiership trip to ailing Newcastle, or hand relatively untested youngster Phil Bardsley another outing following his impressive second-half performance in Budapest.

What Ferguson, nor Sven-Goran Eriksson, who has lost Neville's services for next month's World Cup double-header with Wales and Northern Ireland, can replace is the 30-year-old's vast experience.

'Gary's experience is vital to us,' admitted the United chief.

'He has been such an important player for us over the years.

'But Phil Bardsley proved he has potential, Wes Brown has played there many times before and we have John O'Shea too, so we are well covered in that area.'

Unfortunately for United, Neville's groin was not the end of their injury troubles as Kieran Richardson also limped off with a knee injury, leaving the visitors to play the remaining 20 minutes a man down.

'We won't know the situation until we get Kieran checked later today,' said Ferguson.

It was a sad end to what had otherwise been a good night for Richardson, who came on for Neville and switched into central midfield after half-time after initially slotting in at left-back.

Relishing the extra responsibility, the young Londoner, who scored on his England debut in the United States last summer, revelled in the role and drilled home the visitors' final goal in fine style from 20 yards.

Before that, Gabriel Heinze had converted headers either side of the interval, trebling his previous United goal tally on the ground where he also scored for Argentina in their friendly win over Hungary seven days previously.

'Gaby is such a brave player, he is always capable of scoring from set pieces,' observed Ferguson.

'He is prepared to put his head in and has got his reward.'

With both goals coming direct from corners, United look like ending what has been a miserable return from set pieces over the last few seasons, a situation Ferguson knows can only aid his team's push for honours.

'It is an area we can improve on,' said the Scot.

'If we can get a reasonable return from set pieces it will make a big difference to our goal tally.'
