Everton striker Beattie suffers new injury blow

Everton striker Beattie suffers new injury blow

James Beattie's latest injury setback is not as bad as first thought and he could be fit to play in Everton's next match at Spurs on Saturday week.

The £6million striker limped out of an Everton reserves match last night after scoring just three minutes into the 3-1 defeat away to Manchester United.

He suffered a calf injury and was withdrawn after just 20 minutes but club physio Mick Rathbone said, after examining the player at the club's Bellefield training ground this morning, the prognosis was a positive one.

'It looks like a relatively minor calf strain, although it is too early to say whether he will be able to play in our next match,' he said.

Beattie has been dogged by fitness and injury problems since arriving from Southampton in January.

'It is all just bad luck, but I can shake this little injury off and get back to playing again,' he said.

He has only just returned to action after several weeks out with a toe injury. Last season his attempts to fight his way into the Everton side were further handicapped when he was sent off against Chelsea in his seventh match for the club and subsequently banned.

He has managed only 18 appearance for Everton and has yet to become the focal point of a rebuilding programme in the way manager David Moyes would have hoped.

Beattie could certainly have done without this latest setback but Rathbone said: 'James felt his calf tighten up after 15 minutes and he tried to run it off. But he was still feeling some discomfort so he was sensible enough to come off the pitch.'

Beattie has played in Everton's last two first team matches against Dinamo Bucharest and Manchester City, introduced as a substitute on both occasions.

He is now desperate to get himself back in the starting line-up and is focusing on featuring at White Hart Lane.

'Hopefully I can put it all behind me now, shake this little one off and start playing football,' Beattie told the club's website.

'I've just got to put it down to bad luck. There's nothing else I can do. I felt my calf tighten up. Hopefully it's just a question of getting some physio and resting.

'It was quite a sensible decision to come off and let's hope that I can get back as soon as possible. We will just have to see what it's like next week.'

vs 熱刺...

Tottenham v Everton: PreviewPA

Tottenham's loan striker Mido is set to end his nomadic tour of Europe by signing a permanent deal with the London club at the end of the current season.

Mido joined up with Spurs from AS Roma in the January transfer window and made an immediate impact at White Hart Lane at the start of a two-year loan spell.

He has enjoyed a fine start to the new campaign with Spurs sitting third in the Barclays Premiership with just one defeat.

Mido scored Tottenham's second in their thrilling second-half fightback against second-placed Charlton a fortnight ago before going off with a hamstring strain.

The Egyptian international is fit for tomorrow's home clash with struggling Everton and claims Spurs are ready to make his stay in London a permanent one.

"Tottenham want to sign me permanently," he told Egyptianplayers.com.

"Martin Jol is willing to make an offer to Roma.

"I can sign permanently for Spurs as I have a clause on my loan contract which gives Tottenham the right to sign me on a permanent basis for a fee worth £4.5million."

Meanwhile, Jol will not ask Ledley King to continue in the midfield holding role that looks to have secured his place in Sven-Goran Eriksson's World Cup squad for the finals in Germany next summer.

King was outstanding in a midfield anchor role as he helped England to overcome Poland to finish winners of their group.

Barring injury, Jol now believes King is a certainty for Eriksson's German squad and says he is more talented than players of the calibre of John Terry, Jamie Carragher, Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand.

A proud Jol said: "Ledley has played that role before. He is very versatile. He can play in any position in the back four and in midfield. He doesn't lose the ball and he is very comfortable. I knew he could do that job.

"Carrick plays a similar role but he was injured and that was unfortunate for him. But I am happy for Ledley because it is always better for a player to be versatile. Now they know he must be in the squad for Germany.

"They talk about Terry, Campbell and Ferdinand and Carragher but I still think that he is the most talented out of those."

But despite King's crowning moment in an England shirt, Jol will put him back into defence against David Moyes' struggling Merseysiders.

Jol added: "I need Ledley at the back because he is my best defender, although he got a dead leg against Poland that is a big worry for me."

Spurs will welcome back Mido from his hamstring strain against Everton and with Carrick also fit, Jol will have the luxury of choosing from a full-strength squad.

David Moyes has challenged his players to show more of the fire and desire displayed in Everton's doomed UEFA Cup second-leg clash against Dinamo Bucharest.

Everton are bottom of the Barclays Premiership, despite spending approximately £23million since January, with many of their recent signings on the injured list.

Andy van Der Meyde began training this week following groin problems which delayed his medical when he signed, and Moyes admits: "He has got a long way to go before he is ready to play."

Such injuries have compounded the manager's troubles and tomorrow's trip to Spurs, followed by the next week's home game against Chelsea, seem unlikely to ease Everton's position.

Moyes is urging Everton to revisit the spirit of the European night against Dinamo when they won 1-0 on the night, only to exit 5-2 on aggregate.

"The players have to show the kind of display they had against Bucharest," said Moyes.

"There was a real desire against Bucharest. The players were determined to put things right and they managed to do that in the first 45 minutes.

"We need to show that level every week now. That's the way things will have to be at Everton to get us up the table.

"We don't want to be bottom, and I am confident that we will not be there come the end of the season."

Moyes has also reacted to the criticism which has accompanied Everton's slide from qualification for the Champions League to the bottom of the table.

He insists his side, who currently prop up the Premiership by two points and have lost six of seven league matches this season, have nothing to prove.

He said: "We have had a bit of criticism this season, but I do not take it personally.

"We do not have any point to prove. We proved to everyone last season what a good team we are."

Everton are expected to be without striker James Beattie, who Moyes considers unlikely to recover from a calf injury picked up in the reserves.

Moyes hits back at Hiddink in Cahill row

Moyes hits back at Hiddink in Cahill row

Everton manager David Moyes has described as 'incredible' claims by Australia coach Guus Hiddink that the Scot wants Tim Cahill to miss a friendly because of the club's bad start to the season.

Moyes wanted the midfielder to miss Saturday's match against Jamaica at Craven Cottage altogether but, having failed to get Hiddink's agreement, has refused to release him until the last minute - under FIFA rules players have until two days before a match to report for duty.

That drew a withering response from Hiddink who observed that 'with Everton bottom of the English Premier League, they are obviously looking for reasons to keep him at home'.

But, with relations between the two men souring, Moyes is not in a mood to back down.

He told www.evertonfc.com: 'I find it quite incredible that someone would have the audacity to suggest that they are suffering because of Everton's current position.

'I believe the comments were inappropriate and for someone who is also a club manager, they should have known better.

'For the last two years, Tim has had non-stop football and it looks as though Everton are the only ones interested in looking after him and ensuring he doesn't burn himself out.'

With Cahill expected to play some part in the World Cup play-off against a team from South America next month, Moyes feels it is only common sense to allow him a break now.

He added: 'Only weeks ago Tim was involved in games against Samoa and Australia and soon he could be off to play in the play-off in South America and then back to Australia.

'This was the best chance to give him the break he deserves and has nothing to whatsoever to do with our league position.

'Tim was given the week off to recover and this was done purely to benefit him and subsequently Everton and Australia.

'We would never refuse Tim permission to play for Australia, nor would we refuse permission to any of our international players.

'We have good relations with all international managers and their respective FAs but my main concern is Everton Football Club and the well-being of my players.

'I am absolutely staggered they would come out and say the things they did regarding Everton.'

Hiddink's plans have already been hit by injuries to Middlesbrough duo Mark Schwarzer (shoulder) and Mark Viduka (Achilles).

Liverpool midfielder Harry Kewell, who is still recovering from a hernia operation, may play part of the game against the Reggae Boyz.

'He will not be fit to play a full game,' added Hiddink.

Second knee operation for Carsley

Everton midfielder Lee Carsley has been ruled out for another six weeks after being forced undergo a second knee operation.

The 31-year-old originally had surgery on a medial ligament injury in the summer and had expected to be fully fit for the new campaign.

However, Carsley suffered a setback during the Toffeemen's trip to Thailand for the FA Premier League Asia Trophy in July.

Although he has worked hard trying to regain fitness, Everton's medical staff became concerned the injury was not healing as they wanted, prompting Carsley to go under the knife once more.

The surgeon discovered a piece of the ligament was not healing properly, so it is now hoped Carsley will be back in action sometime in late November.

Carsley's absence is a further blow for Everton who are bottom of the table after winning only one of their first seven games.

The bald headed player was a key member of the midfield unit which helped Everton finish fourth in the Premier League last season.
