Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz is convinced his club are destined for great things this season despite their shambolic European exit.
United's plush Trafford Training Centre has been a sombre place over the last few days while the Red Devils have been coming to terms with their midweek defeat in Lisbon.
The loss to Benfica not only consigned United to an exclusive diet of domestic combat for the remainder of the season but also led to sustained calls for Sir Alex Ferguson's 19-year stint as manager to be brought to an end in the summer.
As Ferguson's trusted assistant, Queiroz has also come under fire as well as some senior players, but the former Real Madrid coach is adamant United can still emerge from the turmoil and prove they are winners.
Ahead of the home Premiership match against Everton in which the team will try to erase some of their pain, Queiroz said: ``We are disappointed about what happened in the Champions League but we are still in a position to fight for three major trophies.
``We are second in the Premiership, into the last eight of the Carling Cup and have the FA Cup still to come. Under those circumstances, why shouldn't we still trust and believe in our players?
``We are performing well, the team is progressing and we trust the quality of our preparation.
``This is not a time for talking or finding explanations or excuses. It is time to move forward and deliver.
``But I feel we have reasons which make us confident that by the end of the season this will still have been a great one for us.''
James McFadden hopes he has proved his point and that he will continue as a central striker for Everton at Old Trafford.
The Scot has made no secret of the fact he dislikes playing wide - as he has had to do for most of his time at Goodison Park - despite being a front man for his country.
But McFadden scored his first goal of the season in the win at Blackburn last weekend, showing pace and movement which will have impressed manager David Moyes.
McFadden said: ``I'd like to think I've earned my place in the team now. I had been banging a few goals past Nigel Martyn in training and I've been working hard trying to get in. Hopefully I've been doing well in the matches.
``Now I want to push on and get that extra spark. Last season I scored at Tottenham and went on a bit of a run and hopefully this time I won't get injured and can stay in the team a bit longer.'' [/b]

Everton boss David Moyes expects full-back Nuno Valente to prove his international class after making a stop-start entrance to English football.

The Portuguese left-back was recruited by manager David Moyes from Porto in the summer following a strong recommendation from Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho.
Everton's fans had little time to make a judgement about Valente, who won the Champions League and UEFA Cup with Mourinho at Porto, before he sustained a hamstring strain during Everton's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Goodison Park in October.
After more than a month out, Valente returned to Everton's line-up for Sunday's draw at Manchester United and Moyes is confident he can now begin to show his true quality.
'He played very well on Sunday,' said Moyes.
'He's got all the qualities you'd expect of the Portuguese left-back.
'He'll play in the World Cup for Portugal, he's got a Champions League medal and a UEFA Cup medal and you don't play regularly at left-back for those type of clubs and those countries if you're a mug.
'Like anybody else, it can take time to settle into a new country. When he got injured against Chelsea he just looked like he was beginning to settle and his performances were being raised game by game and I thought he showed that against Manchester United.'
Valente came back into an Everton side brimming with self-belief, and after only one defeat in the last seven matches, they hope to extend that positive run with victory over West Ham at Goodison Park tonight.
Everton's recent run has enabled them to climb the table after a desperate start to the season when they won only one of their first nine league games and crashed out of both the Champions League and UEFA Cup at the first hurdles.
But Moyes now believes the self-belief is back among the squad as they face a tough schedule of seven matches in December, including home games to come against Bolton and Liverpool.
'A lot of it is down to the players' confidence and being more comfortable on the ball and generally just playing much better,' explained Moyes.
'The players have always been the same, but the wins have made them relax more, they are more comfortable on the ball and all round they are doing better.
'Getting good results against the top teams does lots for for the morale because it makes everybody believe much more in what's happening and it makes the players understand that what they're doing is right.'
Everton will be favourites to continue their recent run against a West Ham side who have won only once on their travels this season despite an encouraging start to their Premiership return.
'I think West Ham have done very well this season,' added Moyes. 'A little bit like Wigan, they've come up from the lower division winning most of their games.
'They've got some good results which has given them great confidence and self-belief that they can do it in the Premier League and they'll be feeling they are a long way towards reaching that first objective of staying in the Premier League.'[/b][/color]

Sam Allardyce hopes to inflict more disappointment on David Moyes at Goodison Park after both Bolton and Everton missed out on the acquisition of Roy Keane.
Allardyce insisted Wanderers were serious alternatives to Celtic in the chase for free agent Keane, who quit Manchester United last month.
The 34-year-old, who also interested Everton, opted to join the club he supported as a youngster rather than spearhead the Lancashire club's challenge for UEFA Cup honours and a top-six Barclays Premiership finish.
``We will probably both cry over our beer after the game but I hope I am not crying as much as Dave (Moyes) because we have got a result against him!'' declared Allardyce, ahead of the match with Everton.
``Not being able to clinch Roy's signing is particularly disappointing because he is a world-class player .
``From my point of view it was a top-class player, who, on January 1, I could put into the team and say 'this man is going to make us better'.
``I had no doubts at all about that. Where I can go and find that now is virtually impossible.''
Keane suggested he gave serious thought to a move closer to home but wanted a change of scene rather than continue his career in England, following 13 years with United.
``We were right there as one of the two or three clubs he was going to choose from,'' added Allardyce.
``When you come so close it is an even bigger disappointment than just a straightforward 'no'.''
One former international midfielder who is thrilled to be involved with Bolton this weekend is Welshman Gary Speed, a lifelong Everton fan and former Toffee.
``I love playing against them, especially at Goodison Park,'' said Speed. ``I supported them as a kid and it is a fantastic stadium.
``They beat us last season and at the start of this campaign, so it would be nice to get one over on them. However we know it will be a difficult game.''
Bolton totally dominated the meeting between the two teams at the Reebok back in August only to lose by a single goal which gave Everton their only points in their opening eight matches of the campaign.
Jamaican full-back Ricardo Gardner is doubtful with a hamstring injury after he failed to reappear for the second half of the 1-1 draw with Sevilla in midweek which sealed a place in the final 32 of the UEFA Cup.
One definite change at the back is enforced with Tal Ben Haim serving a suspension.
Richard Wright is hoping to make the most of his opportunity to help Everton towards the top half of the Barclays Premiership.
Former England goalkeeper Wright should retain his place for the visit of Bolton with first-choice Nigel Martyn still battling a groin injury.
After waiting for his chance this season, Wright came on as a substitute in the win over Blackburn and impressed in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
But he was beaten twice in midweek, the first a freakish own goal from captain David Weir, as West Ham shattered a sequence of 14 points from seven outings.
Nevertheless, Wright is hoping to keep his place between the sticks even when Nigel Martyn returns.
``Not playing makes you hungry,'' admitted Wright.
``The hardest thing is not having that Saturday night feeling: you have gone out there and done your best, gone home and seen the family with that feeling of achieving something from the weekend.
``I wasn't getting that and I need that. That is the drug in football.
``When you are sitting on the sidelines, any game that comes along you want to play in.
``The games are coming thick and fast so hopefully I can get some games under my belt and perform the way I know I can and enjoy the football.''
David Moyes is challenging the team to produce a run of form like that which arrested their early-season slump.
``We have to look at the bigger picture,'' he said.
``If you take the last eight games we have been in a good stretch of form.
``If we get one of these every so often where we win four or five and draw a couple I will settle for that.''
Tim Cahill returns from suspension tomorrow but Moyes may have to do without James McFadden after the Scotland international limped out of the defeat to the Hammers with a foot injury.
McFadden, who caused problems in the 20 minutes he was on the field and set up James Beattie's goal, appeared to suffer the injury in a challenge and will be given a late fitness test.[/b][/color]
