Outspoken managers escape FA censure

The Football Association will not take any action against Birmingham manager Steve Bruce or Everton boss David Moyes after comments about referees on Boxing Day.

Bruce was angered after Muzzy Izzet was sent off for a second bookable offence when referee adjudged him to have dived in the 2-0 Premiership defeat at Tottenham.

The Blues boss branded Dowd's decision as 'pathetic' and said his performance was 'poor' but the FA will not be taking disciplinary action.

Moyes has also escaped censure after saying Mike Riley missed a deliberate handball in his side's 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

Striker Milan Baros later admitted he had handled in the build-up to his opening goal and Moyes voiced his displeasure after the game. His remarks, however, were not serious enough to warrant action.

The FA are still considering whether to act over comments made by Charlton boss Alan Curbishley about Steve Bennett after his side's 1-0 defeat by Arsenal.

Curbishley was highly critical of the official, who sent off Danny Murphy, suggesting that because he is based in nearby Kent he was wary of appearing biased and did not give them certain decisions.

'He is a local ref and perhaps it is something we have to look at,' Curbishley said after the game.

'He is not far from us and perhaps when they come into games refereeing their local teams, it is a bit difficult for them, with perhaps favouritism being labelled at them or whatever - but he has certainly shown none of that to us.'

Everton finished with nine men as Liverpool clinically won this pulsating Mersey derby.

Steven Gerrard establishes a commanding two goal lead for Liverpool.

Goals from Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and Djibril Cisse had Liverpool in command as they swept to their ninth successive Premiership victory.

• Carragher rues rare goal

The triumph takes them to within four points of second-placed Manchester United, with two games in hand.

Everton boss David Moyes had demanded his side ``stood up to be counted'' and although they produced a battling display they could not cope with Liverpool's passing superiority as they lost for the fourth successive game, conceding 13 goals in that sequence.

Referee Graham Poll sent off Phil Neville and Mikel Arteta - both for two bookable offences - as the game started running away from Everton in the second period.

The hosts made three changes from the side that lost 4-0 at Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

Out went James McFadden, Leon Osman and defender Per Kroldrup, with David Weir, Kevin Kilbane and Nuno Valente coming in as boss Moyes searched for the right formula to halt the Toffees dismal form.

Liverpool, after eight successive league victories, left John Arne Riise, Luis Garcia and Fernando Morientes on the bench and brought in Djibril Cisse up front, Stephen Warnock at full back and Mohamed Sissoko into midfield.

And they were on the offensive from the off, first Cisse hooked wide from a corner and then a fine saving tackle from Joseph Yobo halted Peter Crouch in the box.

But Everton were soon at the throats of their local rivals, Simon Davies had a shot charged down and Tony Hibbert forced Jose Reina into a plunging save from 25 yards.

The fight and desire that seems to have been lacking in Everton's play for much of the season was certainly back for the derby, as they pinned Liverpool in their last third with long throws and intense pressure on defenders.

But Liverpool hit them on the break on 11 minutes. Sissoko's header in midfield was nodded down by Cisse for Steven Gerrard's header into the path of Crouch. Nuno Valente looked to be playing him onside and the big striker took the ball round Nigel Martyn before firmly slotting the ball into the far corner.

Seven minutes later it was two. Tim Cahill's headed clearance was snapped up by Gerrard who surged forward to unleash a 20 yarder that brushed Yobo but was always on target to flash past an unsighted Martyn.

Phil Neville, playing in a central midfield role, urged on his Everton colleagues and produced one 20 yarder that was deflected wide.

They were beginning to force the errors from Liverpool, and only a couple of inches and a linesman's flag deprived James Beattie of a goal from a Tim Cahill cross. The linesman had signalled the ball was just over the line when the Australian played it in.

But Liverpool did not learn and allowed Everton to push forward, paying the price three minutes from the break.

This time Beattie's effort was allowed as Liverpool conceded their first goal in 762 Premiership minutes on 42 minutes. Kilbane and Davies worked to get the ball into the six yard box and Beattie headed it wide of Jose Reina. They were back in the game.

But after just 74 seconds of the second period, Liverpool restored their two-goal lead.

Warnock found Harry Kewell who helped a clearance down the left touchline to Cisse. The Frenchman attacked Weir on a powerful run and went round the Scot with ease before producing a stunning finish with a low sidefoot into the far corner for Liverpool's third.

Neville was booked for a foul on Sissoko and from the free kick, Gerrard saw a dipping effort clear the bar. Everton then lost Davies on 56 minutes after the Welshman was clattered by colleague Neville and despite treatment was replaced by McFadden.

Kewell was booked for dissent but when Neville caught Sissoko with another wayward attempt to get the ball, referee Poll showed him a second yellow and then a red.

Beattie was booked for a foul on Warnock before Liverpool sent on Morientes for Crouch. Everton, to their credit, still tried to make a game of it and their aerial work continued to bother Liverpool.

With 10 minutes left Riise took over from Kewell on the left flank, but Everton refused to give in and Beattie swept an effort over the top from Yobo's flick on.

Luis Garcia came on for Gerrard with six minutes left, the job now surely done.

But there was still time for Arteta to be booked for a late flick at Sami Hyypia and then sent off for a second bookable offence - a foul on Luis Garcia - in injury time.

• Carragher rues rare goal

Jamie Carragher admitted a failure to keep a ninth successive league clean sheet took the shine off Liverpool's derby success at Everton tonight.

Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and Djibril Cisse got the goals which gave Rafael Benitez's men victory in the 202nd Merseyside derby.

But James Beattie netted for Everton just before half-time in a 3-1 win for the Reds - the first goal they have conceded in nine Premiership matches.

And Carragher told Sky Sports afterwards: 'It's disappointing to concede just before half-time - we were expecting a battle in the second half but the third goal (by Cisse) killed the game.

'We are disappointed to concede because the aim before the game was to keep a clean sheet and we haven't done it.'

The defender continued: 'I know how much this game means - people talk about the Manchester United games but I think for me and Steven it's the biggest game of the season.'

Gerrard added: 'We've got the bragging rights until the next derby now.

'I practise shooting as much as I can and although tonight's goal took a bit of a deflection I'll take it.'

Liverpool are now third, four points behind second-placed United with two games in hand - but 15 adrift of champions Chelsea.

And as for Liverpool's title hopes, Gerrard added: 'We'll keep going, trying to make up ground.

'Chelsea aren't dropping many points but we've got to just concentrate on what we're doing.'

Everton manager David Moyes was left to lament the turning points in the game.

'The way it's been recently, we've not quite been getting decisions. I thought our (disallowed) goal was a goal and didn't think theirs was over the line - in fact I'm positive it wasn't,' he added on Sky Sports.

'We conceded goals at bad times but I'm really pleased with the boys' effort. I was disappointed with the sendings off, the boys (Phil Neville and Mikel Arteta) should have known better when they were on bookings.

'The players gave their all but we lost a goal in the opening minute which was unbelievable but credit to them, they kept going. But it wasn't to be.'

Irvine gives backing to Moyes

Everton coach Alan Irvine has jumped to the defence of his boss David Moyes as the club face a crucial game away to bottom club Sunderland.

Moyes suffered abuse on local and national radio phone-ins after the Merseyside derby defeat by Liverpool which saw Everton finish with nine men after Phil Neville and Mikel Arteta were sent off in a torrid match.

Both are suspended at the Stadium of Light and Neville will also miss the home game on Monday with Charlton because the red card on Wednesday was his second of the season.

With serious injury doubts over Simon Davies, Per Kroldrup and Nuno Valente - all facing late fitness tests on ankle injuries - Moyes is facing up to a crisis which has now started to include fans' disquiet over his own position.

In one local phone-in, former Everton star Derek Mountfield even suggested Moyes should consider his position after the 3-1 mauling by Liverpool.

But Irvine believes fans and critics have short memories, saying: 'I don't listen to phone-ins during the good days so I won't start bothering with them now.

'But I find it surprising that David's ability is being doubted. And that's not just because I am working with him.

'You cannot be manager of the year twice in three years and not know what you are doing.

'I think David has shown he is a tremendous manager and I know he is not under any pressure from the board.'

He added: 'It is up to us to lift the players, that has been hard at times, but we are finding that the treatment room is not so full. Sometimes when a team is doing badly there seems to be a lot of injuries.

'But we have people coming back, people trying hard to get themselves fit.

'People are entitled to their opinions, but David has achieved a great amount at this club, in recent times. And he does not just become a bad manager.'

Moyes has once again expressed the belief that his players have the ability to fight their way out of a nightmare run that has seen them lose four on the trot and concede 13 goals in the process.

Both Moyes and Irvine believe their players have performed well for long spells during this current run and suffered a succession of poor refereeing decisions.

Irvine said: 'It always seems that decisions go against you when you are down at the bottom.'

Moyes added: 'We have got to stop conceding goals. We went into the game against Liverpool determined to make it harder for them to score against us but they got two early on and the plan went out of the window.

'But the players never let their heads drop and I have told them it's a start. Effort is the least we can give people.

'At the moment we are missing our ability to play much better than we have been doing. We need to try to get that back quickly.

'I hope the recovery comes from the heart. We will all be at Sunderland tomorrow trying to get a result. We hope that everyone sticks with us.'

Everton have added youngster Mark Hughes to a seriously depleted squad which will also include Scotland international Gary Naysmith for the first time this season.

He is nearing fitness after a serious ankle problem which has needed several operations. Everton would not want to rush him back in normal circumstances, but they have Lee Carsley, Alessandro Pistone, James Vaughan and Andy van der Meyde also out injured and the squad has been stripped to the bare bones.

The Australian, who scored the goal which sent Millwall into the 1994 FA Cup final at Everton's expense, repeated the dose two minutes into time added on at the Stadium of Light to leave the home side floored.

Toffees boss David Moyes saw his side survive a second-half battering, with Nigel Martyn making a brilliant one-handed save to deny substitute Anthony Le Tallec.

The home side's fans had been taunting their Everton counterparts with a chorus of 'You are going down with the Sunderland', but they were silenced as Cahill's goal left the Black Cats with just six points at the midway point of their season.

The stakes could hardly have been higher before kick-off. Promoted Sunderland must put together a series of wins to stand any chance of escaping the bottom three, while Everton, who had slumped to 17th, have looked unrelated to the side which finished fourth last season.

• McCarthy bemoans 'cruel' game

Mick McCarthy's Sunderland ended a nine-game losing run in the league with a goalless draw against Bolton on Boxing Day and were again well organised in defence, with Kelvin Davis saving from Tony Hibbert and former Sunderland player Kevin Kilbane.

They also had the better chances early on.

Liam Lawrence tested Martyn with a left-footed drive, and striker Jon Stead, still waiting for his first Sunderland goal, should have broken the deadlock on the half-hour mark.

The ball ricocheted from a midfield tussle straight into his path, but with just the `keeper to beat, he drilled his shot straight into Martyn's arms.

Strike partner Andy Gray was replaced by Le Tallec four minutes before half-time, and although his confidence will have been boosted little by the ironic cheers from a section of the home support which accompanied his disappointed walk to the sideline, his impact had been minimal.

Sunderland, as they had on Boxing Day, returned early after half-time for a warm-up on the pitch, and when Everton re-emerged, they did so without James McFadden, whose place was taken by Marcus Bent.

The home side went close within seconds of the resumption when Stead fed Dean Whitehead, whose first touch allowed David Weir to intervene, with referee Rob Styles waving away the midfielder's muted appeals for a penalty.

Lawrence's clever backheel allowed Julio Arca to drill a 50th-minute cross towards Le Tallec in front of goal, but full-back Nuno Valente covered superbly to clear before the Frenchman could shoot.

McCarthy's men were enjoying their best spell of the game and might have taken the lead twice within seconds as the Merseysiders wobbled alarmingly.

First Martyn pulled off a super one-handed save to keep out Le Tallec's header from a 52nd-minute Lawrence cross, and then the former Mansfield midfielder hammered a long-range effort just wide from distance.

It took a good block from Joseph Yobo to deny Stead on 58 minutes with Tommy Miller heading wastefully off target after finding acres of space from the resulting corner.

But Stead saw another effort deflected wide after turning smartly on Justin Hoyte's 63rd-minute cross and Lawrence could not hit the target with a header from Arca's ball two minutes later.

Moyes' response was to replace midfielder Simon Davies with former Newcastle striker Duncan Ferguson with 23 minutes remaining, but Stead saw a left-footed effort drop inches wide seconds later.

Le Tallec scuffed a left-foot volley straight at Martyn three minutes later after Stead's shot had looped up off a defender, and Sunderland's desperation was mounting. But they still looked the likelier scorers.

Davis had to block bravely from Bent after Kilbane's 77th-minute corner was allowed to reach him at the far post and James Beattie curled a long-range free-kick wide.

But it took a superb challenge by Cahill to deny Lawrence in front of goal with nine minutes remaining.

Arca flashed an 86th-minute shot agonisingly wide of the far post, but two minutes into injury-time, Cahill arrived to meet Kilbane's corner with an unstoppable header.

• 'Cruel game' hurts McCarthy

Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy was left to contemplate the most cruel of late twists as Everton snatched victory over the dominant Black Cats in stoppage time.

'It's a great game, isn't it? It's a fantastic game,' said a rueful McCarthy.

'For the most part of that afternoon, it was a very enjoyable, terrific performance full of energy and good football and creating chances. Of course, the one cruel bit is in the 92nd minute when we conceded.

'It's difficult when you have lost to deny everything that's gone before is bad, but it's not.

'We built on a very good performance against Bolton and but for perhaps a bit more quality in front of goal and one terrific save from their goalkeeper and not marking from a corner kick, it's cost us.

'But overall, it was very much the beautiful game for 45 minutes in the second half; it just turned out to be a cruel one at the crucial moment.'

McCarthy admitted he felt sorry for his players, and he will order them to deliver exactly the same kind of performance at Craven Cottage.

'It's very easy at times to steam into them and tear into them because they have lost,' he said. 'We have had a lot of disappointments this year, but all I can ask is that they play the way they did.

'They gave absolutely everything in terms of effort and energy and endeavour and work-rate. There's a great spirit among them and a good work ethic, and good football as well.

'Everything they have done this afternoon was good, and one moment when somebody doesn't pick up properly doesn't, in my eyes, just wash over everything that's gone.

'If we continue to play like we did this afternoon, we will pick up points. Whether a point would have made any difference in terms of us staying up or going down, I don't know. Time will tell. But it would have made us feel a lot better, of course.'

Everton assistant boss Alan Irvine was a relieved man after the final whistle.

Asked if his side had got away with it, he responded: 'Yes, probably. Sunderland will no doubt be disappointed. They had a few chances.

'But it was really important for us today with the amount of goals we have conceded of late that we got a clean sheet.

'We asked the players to dig in and show a lot of character, and they certainly did that. I'm sure if I was sitting on the Sunderland bench, I'd be disappointed that we had not got something out of the game.'

Everton boss David Moyes could not have imagined at half-time how meekly his team would fold, but Cahill got them out of jail with his late strike.

'We felt very comfortable in the first half,' said Irvine.

'It was fairly even, I thought, but in the second half, Sunderland started really well and put us under a lot of pressure, and it wasn't really until we changed things in terms of our shape that we relieved the pressure.

'We have been missing Tim's goals. They were a huge bonus for us last year and hopefully, that's the start of a nice run of goals for him.'
