ROME, November 24 (UEFA Cup) - [color=Blue]Antonio Cassano justified his recall to the Roma squad with the equaliser to deny Strasbourg a famous win at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday night.
Cassano's 73rd-minute right-footed effort cancelled out Habib Bellaid's goal shortly after the re-start.
Italian international Cassano has been left out of the Giallorossi squad since September following a contract dispute and he received a frosty welcome by the home fans.[/color]
Despite the absence of four key players, including captain Mickael Pagis, Strasbourg, who are bottom of Ligue 1, proved sturdy opponents with the Romans only coming to life in the last 20 minutes of the game.
The visitors could have taken an early lead with Pontus Farnerud's diagonal shot going inches wide of Roma goalkeeper Gianluca Curci's right post.
Roma replied with Houssine Kharja's strike forcing goalkeeper Nicolas Puydebois to dive to his left.
Shabani Nonda missed a golden chance to give his team a 13th-minute lead with his close-range header going high over the bar.
Midway through the first half, Gianluca Curci made a fantastic save following Alexander Farnerud's effort on target.
At the other end, Francesco Totti's left-footed effort from distance went wide of the far post.
Shortly after the half-hour mark, Alberto Aquilani's right footed effort forced Puydebois to clear and the French keeper had to fully stretch to clear Totti's powerful strike towards the left post.
But Roma's efforts proved to no avail as they went into the break with the score unchanged.
Seven minutes after the re-start, Strasbourg took the lead with Bellaid catching Roma's defence off guard and with a left-footed strike beat Curci.
Spalletti made his first substitution with Edgar Alvarez replacing Totti on the hour mark.
The Giallorossi lacked ideas in attack and were lucky not to concede the second of the evening after Salim Diane's close-range strike went high over the bar.
With 17 minutes remaining, Roma equalised with Nonda serving an unmarked Cassano inside the area and his right-footed effort beat Puydebois.
The goal inspired the hosts who seconds later, could have taken the lead had Puydebois not made a fantastic save from Nonda's header.
