The 28-year-old has also been severely censured and warned as to his future conduct, but has, as expected, has escaped the sack.
In addition, the Magpies have confirmed that they are to appeal against 26-year-old Dyer's red card after furious chairman Freddy Shepherd met manager Graeme Souness and the two players this morning.
'Lee Bowyer has been handed an unprecedented fine, severely censured and additionally warned as to his future conduct by Newcastle United following his attack on team mate Kieron Dyer during Saturday's home match with Aston Villa,' the club said in a statement.
'The attack led to both players being dismissed from the field of play by the referee.
'The decision to fine and censure Bowyer was taken after chairman Freddy Shepherd and team manager Graeme Souness interviewed both players at the club's training ground this morning.
'The fine, amounting to six weeks wages, is the highest fine handed out by the club.
'In Kieron Dyer's case, in accordance with the disciplinary regulations of the Football Association the club has, on the player's behalf, submitted notice of the player's intention to submit a claim of wrongful dismissal from the field of play. This claim will be submitted by noon ---orrow together with video evidence.
'Both players have had a fair hearing and the club is fully in support of Kieron Dyer's claim to the Football Association.'
Bowyer's fine is thought to amount to around #200,000, but, despite a severe dressing down, he has been handed a lifeline by the club.
Football Association chiefs were today considering referee Barry Knight's report into the incident, but the former Leeds player is facing a four-match ban after being sent off earlier in the season at Liverpool.
That will keep him out of the FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester United at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on April 17 as well as league games at Tottenham, Norwich and Old Trafford.
Dyer will hope for leniency from the FA after insisting that he did not throw a punch, and that could yet hand him a reprieve for the FA Cup tie, although TV pictures suggested that Dyer was attempting to retaliate when Villa midfielder Gareth Barry intervened to separate the warring pair.
An FA disciplinary commission will consider Dyer's appeal ---orrow afternoon.
The FA's website said: 'Under the FA's disciplinary regulations, Newcastle must submit the detailed claim by 12 noon on Tuesday. Any received claim will be heard by a disciplinary commission on Tuesday afternoon.'
The incident has come as a major embarrassment to Newcastle and has taken the gloss off Friday's announcement that skipper Alan Shearer is to play on for another season.
New player-coach Shearer made his feelings known in the dressing room in the immediate aftermath and ordered the pair to make their public apologies, while Shepherd and Souness were just as furious with two men who have courted more than their fair share of controversy over the years.
The Scot was more annoyed with Bowyer's conduct after he sparked the spat by angrily confronting his team-mate in his frustration at repeatedly not receiving the ball from him, and it was he who struck the first blow as Dyer attempted to hold him off.
Souness immediately announced the club's intention to appeal on Dyer's behalf on the grounds that he had been the victim rather than the aggressor and everyone within the Magpies camp will be hoping for a positive outcome with the former Ipswich player having once again deputised well for injured striker Patrick Kluivert at the weekend. |
