Coleman named Real Sociedad boss
Chris Coleman has been appointed the new manager of Spanish second division outfit Real Sociedad.
The 37-year-old Welshman will be unveiled by the Basque side in the next few days after his appointment by club president Maria De La Pena.
"He brings freshness and new ideas and the main aim will clearly be to return to the Primera Liga," said De La Pena.
Sociedad were relegated from La Liga last season for the first time in their history, finishing 19th out of 20.
Coleman was recommended to De La Pena and Sociedad by their former manager John Toshack.
The club's former coach Salva Iriarte will work alongside Coleman after being given the post of sporting director.
Iriarte has been Toshack's assistant with Wales since November 2004, and it is believed that he could combine the club role with his international duties.
Coleman's appointment is subject to the new board being ratified on Saturday.
The former Wales centre-back has been out of football since he was sacked as Fulham manager in April.
Coleman joined Fulham as a player in 1997 in a £2m move from Blackburn, but injuries suffered in a car crash in 2001 led to his retirement less then two years later.
He took over as manager in April 2003 following the departure of Jean Tigana.
He was eventually replaced by Lawrie Sanchez, paying the price for a seven-game winless streak that left the club hovering above the relegation zone. |
