England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson revealed Michael Owen had called him for talks about his club future amid worries over his World Cup place.
Owen is weighing up possible moves to Liverpool or Newcastle after finding himself stuck on the bench at Real Madrid, just at the start of a season building up to the World Cup finals in Germany.
He therefore phoned the England coach earlier this week to filter-004 his future, revealing his fears for his international place if he stays on the sidelines at club level.
"I spoke to Michael on Thursday and we talked for 10 minutes.
"He is worried about his club football but has even more worries about the national team in a World Cup year," disclosed Eriksson.
"Michael Owen is 25 - a golden age for England - so of course he wants to play at the World Cup.
"His worry was that if he played like he did last season, would I pick him or not?
"I told him that, of course, if he plays as many games as he did last season, I will pick him.
"If he never plays, however, then it's a tricky one."
Owen is set to be included in the England squad on Sunday night night for the imminent World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Northern Ireland, although he is suspended for the first game in Cardiff.
Eriksson added: "He is always a very calm young man but is very keen to play football, so you can understand that he wants to come back to England.
"If he stays at Real Madrid then he doesn't know how much he will play.
"I think something has to happen very soon, although exactly what, I don't know.
"I will be very happy the day that they tell me what's going to happen to him as I think he's worried. He's a calm person but he wants to know his future."

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho revealed John Terry is a doubt for England's World Cup qualifier against Wales next weekend in Cardiff.
England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is already without central defenders Sol Campbell and Ledley King, while right-back Gary Neville has also been ruled out with a groin injury.
Now Terry has sustained a knee injury during Chelsea's 2-0 win at Tottenham and, while he played on after lengthy treatment, Mourinho insisted most other players would have been taken off.
The Chelsea boss will leave the final decision over Terry's fitness to the England medical staff, with the defender being a resilient character, but fears the first qualifier against Wales could come too soon.
"He has a problem with his knee. I think another player, more sensitive without his mind to play through pain, would have been off," he said.
"I don't know about England. He has to join up for the medical department to see him and take reports. They have two matches and maybe he can't play the first one, but can play the second one.
"It's a decision for them and I support every decision that they make."
Eriksson could still turn to Jamie Carragher, Wes Brown or Matthew Upson to partner Rio Ferdinand in Cardiff next Saturday, while Terry could yet recover, at least in time to face Northern Ireland in Belfast four days later.
However, with either Glen Johnson or Phil Neville set to play at right-back, Eriksson would be reluctant for any further withdrawals from what will already be an untried back-four against Wales.

Wales will be looking to target the fault lines exposed in the England team by Denmark in next weekend's World Cup qualifier at the Millennium Stadium.
England suffered their worst defeat in 25 years when they went down 4-1 to Denmark in Copenhagen with manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and his assistant Steve McClaren both subsequently expressing their anger at England's performance.
Wales are wary of an English backlash in Cardiff - but John Toshack and his men are determined to make the most of Denmark's victory.
"Denmark have proved that on certain days it can be done.
"It shows in any international game that if you go in with the wrong attitude you get thumped," Wales assistant coach Roy Evans told BBC Radio Five Live.
"Hopefully that defeat has put a glimmer of doubt in England's mind and we can make the most of that.
"We can cause England problems, make it difficult for them and for the fans it would be great to get a result.
"You can't just win on pride and passion, you need ability as well. But if we can get all our guys fit we will give them a game. We have a fair striking potential up front."
Evans, the former Liverpool manager, would love to see Michael Owen return to Anfield but he is more then happy the England striker is suspended for Saturday's game.
"England do have great stand-ins for him but it gives us a real glimmer," said Evans.
"I would love him to be back there (at Liverpool). As a fan I would be delighted."
The England players will be on the receiving end of some harsh words from Eriksson and McClaren when they reconvene to begin preparations for the games against Wales and then Northern Ireland.
"There is certainly some disappointment and anger about that performance which is still there and will have to be talked about when we meet up because certain things in that game we are not pleased about," said McLaren.
"They can't go on because it's World Cup year. We can't afford any slip ups and it is better to be ironed out in friendly games. Wales and Northern Ireland will be very difficult games.
"At the top level players know what they got to do and know where they are letting themselves down.
"They have to approach it in a calm manner because the players know.
"At this level you have pride and ambition to put it right."

Scotland manager Walter Smith believes Darren Fletcher could save Manchester United a fortune as they look for a successor to Roy Keane.
At 34, the Old Trafford captain is in the twilight of his career, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson with the difficult task of replacing the Republic of Ireland international.
Ferguson has experimented by trying to convert combative striker Alan Smith to a midfield role.
But the Scotland boss believes Fletcher, 21, has the ability to move inside from the flanks and take on Keane's mantle.
Smith said: "As far as his club is concerned, Sir Alex Ferguson is the best judge of where to play him.
"Just now he is operating in a similar role for Manchester United as he is for Scotland.
"I can't tell Sir Alex anything, but he can do everything like tackling, joining up play and his passing is good.
"You hear lots of players being linked with United because of who they are, but Darren is going to be a top player.
"It is no secret Roy Keane is coming to the end of his career and Darren has the ability to play in his position.
"United have some top young players and they perhaps take the limelight from the others but Darren is going to be just as good a player as them."
Now Smith is predicting a long and successful career for Fletcher as he prepares for the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Italy and Norway.
He added: "People forget that Darren is a young player.
"He is still only 21 and has 15 caps, which is a lot for a young player - especially in midfield where the physical needs are greater.
"But he is maturing in an exceptional manner and I would have no hesitation in playing him in the centre.
"He is already one of the mainstays of the national team and will keep on getting better, without a doubt.
"He has played exceptionally well for us and has never let us down. He has the world at his feet." |
