Scottie Pippen is seriously considering a comeback and hopes to play for a contending team in this season's playoffs. Pippen, who turned 41 on Sept. 25, says he's in better condition and health than at any time in the last five years. And in the Eastern Conference, his veteran presence could change the balance of power and be a major influence in the playoffs. Or he might be the long-sought backup to relieve the pressure on the Suns' Steve Nash. The possibilities are intriguing. Pippen last played for the Bulls in the 2003-04 season, when knee problems limited him to 23 games. He said he's considering the right situation and plans to talk to some teams and players during the weekend.

Shawn Kemp is in excellent shape and hoping for one last opportunity to play in the NBA. Kemp worked out with the Dallas Mavericks, played during the summer with many of the Sonics players and is eager to prove he can still contribute to a team. Kemp said he is living clean and working with kids with his wife in Houston. But at 36, his time is obviously running out. Said one Western Conference front office executive: "When you look at him on the court, he looks the same. He got himself into shape. But like most guys that age, he can't get off the ground anymore. It just shows you that time gets everybody." The best Kemp can hope for is a training camp invitation in the fall and hopefully the right situation. He would love for it to be the Sonics, but the club would have to be convinced that Kemp is serious and won't experience any more episodes with the law.
