Kidd, Carter, Gasol could be traded before deadline
February 21, 2007
Deal or no deal? NBA teams have until Thursday's trade deadline to decide.
The Los Angeles Lakers may have a chance to pair Jason Kidd with Kobe Bryant in the backcourt. A move like that is what the Lakers probably need to threaten heavyweights Dallas and Phoenix in the Western Conference.
Prying Kidd away from the New Jersey Nets will not be easy. The Lakers may be willing to offer rookie guard Jordan Farmar, forward Brian Cook, center Kwame Brown and a first-round pick for the eight-time All-Star point guard who is averaging 14.3 points, 8.7 assists and 8.0 rebounds this season.
But that is likely not enticing enough for the Nets, who despite a disappointing 25-29 record are just 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Toronto Raptors in the Atlantic Division.
"New Jersey has been great to me, so I don't look to go anywhere," Kidd said. "But if something does happen you have to respect that and move forward."
Speculation started to swirl during All-Star weekend that Kidd and Nets forward Vince Carter were possibly on the trading block. Carter appears to be more likely to get traded since he can opt out of his contract after this season.
An eight-time All-Star, Carter declined to speak when asked if he had informed the Nets whether he planned to test the free agent waters.
Point guard Mike Bibby of the Sacramento Kings is another player who can opt out of his contract at the end of the season, making him a viable candidate to be traded by Thursday's 3 p.m. EST deadline. The Kings are in last place in the Pacific Division with a 22-29 record.
Pau Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies expressed a desire to be traded last month.
The 7-footer helped Spain win the FIBA World Championships last summer, but suffered a broken foot during the tournament. He missed the first 22 games of the season and the Grizzlies went 5-17 in his absence.
The previous season, Gasol was selected to the All-Star team and helped the Grizzlies make the playoffs.
In 32 games this season, Gasol is averaging 20.3 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks. However, the Grizzlies own the worst record (14-40) in the Western Conference.
The Chicago Bulls (29-25) appear to have the most to offer for Gasol. They can put together a package with forwards Luol Deng and Andres Nocioni, a first-round pick from New York that could turn out to be a lottery pick along with the expiring contract of forward P.J. Brown.
Forward Corey Maggette of the Los Angeles Clippers and guards Mike James of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Brevin Knight of the Charlotte Bobcats could also be available in trades.
Two blockbuster trades have already been made this season.
In December, the Denver Nuggets acquired four-time scoring champion Allen Iverson from the Philadelphia 76ers for guard Andre Miller, forward Joe Smith and a pair of 2007 first-round draft picks.
Last month, the Golden State Warriors acquired scorers Al Harrington and Stephen Jackson in an eight-player trade with the Indiana Pacers. |
