The first week with braces is the most miserable ... only soft food or fluid is possible since the teeth are too irritable/painful to chew food. You can prepare some congee, steamed fish or minced beef/pork for your wife. In addition, fruits like pear or apple are yet too hard to chew at this time. From the second week it will be much better.

From my experience, a bit pain after each visit is inevitable during the process of alignment. However, one will get used to it and it will be better as the teeth is getting closer to perfect alignment.
