Sir Alex Ferguson is channelling his energies into trying to add another midfielder to his Manchester United squad.

Ahead of the start of the new Premiership season at the weekend, the Old Trafford boss remains keen to further strengthen his midfield area.

Summer signing Michael Carrick will miss the big kick-off through injury and a deal for Villarreal's Marcos Senna appears to be making slow progress.

Lyon ace Mahamadou Diarra has been a long-term target for The Red Devils, but Real Madrid are also chasing the Mali international.

Ferguson confirmed he is still looking to sign a midfielder in the coming days, ahead of Sunday's game with Fulham.

But the United manager feels that, if his efforts fail to bear fruit, his squad can mount a Premiership title challenge.

"We are trying very hard to get another midfield player in," said Ferguson.

"But, at the end of the day, I have a terrific squad of players with great ability.

"The boys have to accept the challenge. We are ready and hopefully, they can do the business."
