Wenger ready to bag Bapitista
ARSENAL are on the brink of signing Julio Baptista.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had a £13.7million bid turned down for Seville’s Brazilian hitman, 23.
But the Highbury giants are close to agreeing a £15m deal with the Spanish club.
Seville president Jose Maria del Nido said: “There is now a £13.7m offer on the table.
“It looks increasingly clear he will not stay at Seville.”
The news comes as Arsenal centre-half Pascal Cygan predicted striker Thierry Henry may quit the club.
Cygan was stunned by the shock £13.7million sale of Patrick Vieira to Juventus.
And Cygan, 31, admitted: “I can foresee the possibility of Thierry leaving as a result of Patrick’s departure.
“Vieira’s given Arsenal so much and this transfer is a fair way of paying him back.”
Hitman Henry, 27, has two years left on his Highbury contract and is currently negotiating a longer deal.
But Cygan would not be surprised if those talks now stall.
The Frenchman rapped: “I’ve heard people say that boss Arsene Wenger wants to sign two international-class players.
“But if it means losing Pat, what the hell is the point?
“Patrick will leave behind a huge gap and I don’t see who will be able to replace him.
“The training ground will be a sad place without him.”
Gunners winger Robert Pires reckons fellow Frenchman Vieira’s departure is a hammer blow to Arsenal’s title hopes.
Juventus were considering swooping for Pires and Sol Campbell.
But the Turin giants’ interest cooled after they landed Vieira.
