Newcastle offer £11m Owen (7/8)
Newcastle will become the first English club to launch an official bid for Michael Owen. News of the World can reveal Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd will this week offer Real Madrid £11million for the England striker. Talks have already taken place between Newcastle and Owen's representatives SFX. Toon boss Graeme Souness confirmed last night: "Like any Premier League manager I would like Michael Owen. You will have to ask the chairman what the latest situation is, but you can take it we have spoken to him." Owen, 25, would prefer to join Manchester United or return to Liverpool - but he has not dismissed the idea of joining up with his old England strike partner, Alan Shearer. United boss Alex Ferguson has shown no interest.
