Choice is in a sense a neutral thing for many. If we don't get to make choices we live like robots and there's no fun. Choices are important.
Having said that, the 'openness' of choices makes this process so much more a careless and brainless in our part. When we believe we can have another choice down the future, we don't carry that responsibility. We don't have the willingness to stick with the choices we made. That's the downside of having choices.
Think about it, you will get a lot more serious in courtship if you know you only have one shot at it. Once you made that decision, that's it. I am sure most of us will treat the 'selection' of our girlfriend/wife a lot more different than today's norm.
Balance the pros and cons.
