Newcastle United are ready to move for Real Madrid midfielder Thomas Gravesen. And they hope to have him in their side by the time Wigan open the new Premiership season at St James' Park in 17 days time.

But United will have to move quickly because I understand that Middlesbrough have already had preliminary talks with Real about the 30-year-old Danish international.

Gravesen has already rejected a switch to Celtic and he has made it clear that he does not want to rejoin David Moyes at Everton.

My information is that Gravesen is waiting for United to come in for him, and I must say that even allowing for the fact that Roeder's priorities are a couple of strikers, the hard-tackling midfielder would be a great signing.
