Boss Disappointed By Goalless Display
雲佬射失12碼令費sir極之失望
Sir Alex Ferguson was hugely disappointed after United's goalless stalemate with Middlesbrough left the Reds needing a victory in their final match of the season to secure second spot.
The Reds must now beat Charlton at Old Trafford on Sunday to gain automatic qualification to the Champions League after dropping two points against Boro.
Ruud van Nistelrooy's penalty miss was the key moment in a lacklustre ninety minutes.
"It was a bad miss," Sir Alex told MUTV. "He's missed a few [in the past], about half a dozen in fact. It was an important one today and I was hoping he would score.
"I think we deserved to be in front at that stage - we were certainly the better team.
"We didn't get our game going quickly enough in the first half, but we increased the urgency and the tempo of our game in the second half and should have won it.
"We had them penned into their own half for most of the second period but they set out their stall to get the draw after the penalty.
"It was a matter of trying to break them down but unfortunately we weren't able to do that."
The United boss hopes the six-day break in the lead up to the Charlton game will enable the Reds to regain some freshness within the squad.
"Middlesbrough rested their whole team on Saturday [against Everton], whereas we had a very hard match down at Chelsea and used more or less the same players that played in that match," declared Sir Alex.
"Thankfully we've got six days to freshen the players up before the Charlton game and hopefully we'll get our form back.
"We've got a great home record against them and we know we need to win." |
