Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz has ruled out a move for Benfica midfielder Armando Petit.

The Portugal international is on show at the World Cup in Germany this summer and enjoyed an outstanding campaign in helping guide the Lisbon side to the league title last season.

Although they could only manage a disappointing third-placed finish this time around, Petit was again a mainstay in midfield and impressed during their run to the UEFA Champions League quarter finals.

With United looking for midfield reinforcements, Queiroz was asked by RTPN whether The Red Devils were interested in the former Boavista star.

"Petit is an excellent player," said the United number two. "He has fantastic qualities.

"He will be able to play for many teams in Europe as he's an excellent athlete but, at this moment in time, he is not an option for Manchester United."

Nevertheless, Queiroz could still be working with Petit next term as he is being strongly linked with the coach's job at Estadio da Luz.

The former Real Madrid boss is thought to head Benfica's wanted list, although he has stressed he is under contract at Old Trafford so any decision would obviously be out of his hands.

　　英國《曼城晚報》稱，費格遜已經與這位來自馬里的國腳進行了私人會面和談判，雖然雙方目前對此都沒有公開表態，但是馬里國內卻傳出了利好消息。馬里足協主席凱塔十分支持迪亞拉選擇曼聯，另一位足協官員、前馬里國腳迪亞隆也認為，如果迪亞拉決定離開里昂，他會選擇曼聯成為自己的新東家。“如果他決定離開里昂，同時自己可以選擇的話，迪亞拉會加盟曼聯。他曾經打電話征求凱塔意見，哪家球會更適合他的風格，我相信凱塔也會說是曼聯。”

　　費格遜說過，他會把尋找新堅尼的范圍擴大到整個歐洲足壇，迪亞隆向爵爺保證：“迪亞拉能夠滿足曼聯要求。由於語言問題，或許迪亞拉無法成為領袖，但是他會在球場上起到領袖作用。他是一名非常出色的中場球員，強壯的身體完全可以應付英超這種節奏快，拼搶激烈的聯賽。我認為迪亞拉可以排進法甲頂級中場三甲行列。”

　　迪亞拉並非一個純粹的防守型中場，這也是迪亞拉吸引老爵爺的地方，冠軍杯上門前搶點頭槌攻破AC米蘭大門，當時費格遜正坐在聖西羅的球場上。迪亞隆說：“他能為隊友創造機會，同時也能自己破門得分。他有堅尼的特點同時也有史高爾的特點，與韋拉也很相似。”

　　里昂方面曾經表示他們不會放走迪亞拉，不過他們最近對曼聯前鋒雲尼斯特羅表現出的興趣，不排除雙方存在交換的可能性。據《每日星報》報道，里昂俱樂部的官員曾確認這個消息，“確實是這樣，里昂對雲尼斯特羅很感興趣。目前來說，我們還沒有和曼聯開始官方的正式談判，不過我們正在考慮這個可能性。收購雲尼斯特羅有可能以兩種形式，第一種是用現金交易的辦法，第二種則是通過球員的交換。如果談判開始，首先將談論的是完全的資金交易，不過除非我們可以用他們感興趣的一名球員來進行交換，比如迪亞拉。”

比利曾拒絕加盟曼聯

巴西名宿比利表示自己曾經拒絕包括曼聯在內的一眾著名球會。

在巴西球會山度士度過高峰期的比利，透露在1968年時曾拒絕曼聯的邀請。

他對《衛報》表示：「我曾收到曼聯的開出的條件，不過我拒絕了每一支希望收購我的球會，皇家馬德里是芸芸球隊中最強的，不過我實在不願離開山度士。」

比利承認他有機會加盟AC米蘭及祖雲達斯，但他透露出曼聯對他曾作出斟介也令不少人大感詫異。曾任畢士比領隊副手的麥堅尼斯說：「如果比利加盟的確是美好的事情，不過這也是我首次聽到曼聯向他斟介。如果畢士比曾與比利會談，他希望保持秘密也絕對可以理解。」

Jones Desperate For First-Team Chance



David Jones is itching to make an impression if Sir Alex Ferguson hands him more first-team opportunities over the coming months.

United are openly chasing new midfielders, but the progress of 21-year-old Jones in loans at Preston and NEC Nijmegen last season has been eye-catching to say the least.

The Dutch club have left the door open for another loan spell next term, but admit they expect Jones to be given a chance to shine on United's pre-season tour of South Africa.

David told ManUtd.com: "I know the Club are probably going to bring in at least one new midfielder, but being at United has always meant that you're going to be up against very good players anyway.

"I'm dying to get a chance. It's been the season that I go out on loan that suddenly a lot of spaces open up in the midfield. I guess it just wasn't meant to be for me last season.

"In the previous season there was too many midfielders, there was a massive queue. This year the opportunities might have been there, but you just realise you can't do anything about it."

The 2005/06 season was a split education for Jones. Five months of graft in the Championship were followed by a more technical spell in De Eridivisie.

"That was the idea behind it," he said. "Jim Ryan came to me and pointed out that I'd experienced one type of football in the Championship - the physical approach without much actual football.

"That was a valuable experience to go through, but Jim thought in the second half of the season it would be good to get a decent football education."

After three fine goals in 24 Championship appearances, Jones quickly discovered his goalscoring touch in a more attacking role in Holland - scoring six times in 13 games.

Four of those goals came in David's first two NEC appearances, but he had become hugely popular with  the Dutch fans before even kicking a ball.

He admitted: "It was nice that the fans were all behind me straight away, but that's the expectation you carry when you come from United. It was nice, but I still had to live up to those expectations.

"It was a great experience for me in Holland. There, everyone plays football so hopefully I'm a better all-round player as a result."

United’s goalkeeping coach Tony Coton says the position of Edwin van der Sar’s understudy is up for grabs.

Tim Howard, United’s current number two in the goalkeeping stakes at Old Trafford, will spend next season on loan at Everton.

But three of United’s other stoppers – Ben Foster (23), Tom Heaton (22) and Luke Steele (21) – are all vying to take the American’s place. All three keepers are yet to make a competitive appearance for the Reds.

Foster, who will play for Watford in the Championship play-off final against Leeds on Sunday, has impressed at Vicarage Road and is favourite to take the spot.

It would seem the perfect follow-up to the first-team experience gained at Watford if Foster spent a year at United learning from van der Sar. But United may still decide to send him to another club that plays a style more similar to United’s.

"We have Ben, Tom Heaton and Luke Steele and it is all up in the air at the moment," Coton told the Manchester Evening News.

"When we come back on July 3 we will have a look at it and make some decisions. But I would have great belief in any of our young keepers to understudy Edwin.

"In Ben Foster's case he has been successful during his loan at Watford. But often what we like to do is farm them out to more than one club to gain different experiences.

"For one of the spells, we would send a player out to a team who plays in a similar style to United. Though Watford have been excellent for Ben they do play a different game to us.

"We like our goalkeepers to distribute the ball quickly but to build attacks from our penalty box. Watford like to get the ball up to the front as fast as possible. Ben might need to experience being with a side whose style resembles Uniteds."

Coton has kept a keen eye on Foster’s progress with Watford this season. He has seen six live matches and watched the rest of the young keeper’s matches on a DVD. Watford boss Adie Boothroyd has provided in-depth reports every three months on the player’s progress, not just on the pitch and in training, but his interaction with the players, the club and the local community.

Watford reaching the play-off finals was an unexpected bonus to the Foster and United.

"Reaching the play-offs is important to Ben as part of his progress," Coton added. "When we send players out on loan we like to send them somewhere as high as possible. But for Watford to do so well has been a bonus. He has done exceptionally well.

"Ben has got lots of potential. He has a great physique and his distribution is second to none. He has a great right arm and an unbelievable left foot.

"I reckon about 60 per cent of Watford's goals this season have come from Ben's assists. It’s been a great experience for him."
