Baggies snub Wigan over Earnshaw
Roberts sad at losing Ellington
Wigan manager Paul Jewell claims he was close to signing West Brom striker Robert Earnshaw before Baggies boss Bryan Robson did a U-turn on the deal.
The Latics lost Nathan Ellington to West Brom for £3m and Earnshaw was thought to be part of a swap deal.
But Jewell said: "Bryan Robson rang me and asked about Nathan and would we be interested in doing something with Earnshaw as well.
"I said we would do if he was going but now they don't want to sell him."
Wigan have lost their first two Premiership games, 1-0 to both Chelsea and Charlton, and boss Jewell knows they need to bolster their striking options.
He admitted they were interested in Norwich's Dean Ashton, but with the Canaries unwilling to sell they have been forced to look elsewhere.
Jewell added: "We were told by Norwich Dean was not for sale, so we never got to the stage of making a bid.
"We respect that and understand that, and so things are ongoing with other players.
"We need one striker, if not two, and there are one or two other positions which need to be looked at as well.
"It is not a knee-jerk reaction because we have been looking even before Nathan left, and even if we had beaten Charlton 3-0 we still would need a striker."
