This is a bit off our original topic but I thought I can contribute a bit more on the High Street story.
Regarding the ghost stories at High Street. The building was transformed to a community hall and a senior home 10+ years ago. I lived acrossed from it for a year. Though there are many ghost stories associated with that place. But as our brother has stated, most of the ghosts are indeed drug addicts. They used to lived up on the Yu To Sang Fortness (just across from Bonham road, besides YWCA). I was in elementary school when I visited that fortness with friends. I saw a lot of XXX magazines and needles on the ground. The fortness and the old mental hospital were the main 'residence' for the drug addicts for a long time.
So where did the ghost stories came from? it's actually from the park across the old mental hospital. My friend did his M.Philo at CU on HK history and he told me that park used to be a local cemetary (san fun in Cantonese) before 1842. When the Britons came, they destroyed the graves and make it a park.
I played football, basketball as well as run there for over 25 yrs. And I have always wonder why the gov't would only use 2/3 of the land for playground and trees. 1/3 of the park (the south side, near the mental hospital) was closed off for tree nusary until reconstruction began in the late 90s.
My wife and I lived on the 23rd floor and would sometimes look at the park at night from our balcony. I do get the creepy feeling once in a while. |
