Injury concerns over Roon and Ron
Sir Alex Ferguson has played down injury concerns over Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the new campaign.
Manchester United's talented youngsters both limped out of tonight's 6-1 demolition of Royal Antwerp with ankle injuries and were still hobbling as they made their way to the tunnel after the final whistle.
Six days before his side take on Hungarian title-winners Debrecen in the Champions League qualifiers, and just over a week away from the opening Premiership encounter with Everton, fitness scares are the last thing Ferguson wanted.
However, a quick examination of the duo confirmed the damage not to be too serious, while absent duo Ryan Giggs and Louis Saha are also expected to be fit for next week's European outing at Old Trafford.
'Both Wayne and Cristiano took knocks to the ankle, but they will be okay,' said Ferguson.
'We left Ryan at home because he had a bit of a virus and Louis got a bit of a knee knock, but we hope they will be fine, while Park Ji-Sung will definitely be fit for next week after the blow he took to the head.'
Given the barracking he received once again from his own supporters, Rio Ferdinand might not be looking forward to the European tie quite as much.
Although the bile directed at him as he made his way down the tunnel at half-time looked worse than it was because the fans dishing out the abuse were penned in by metal fences, resentment over his failure to sign a new £100,000-a-week contract lingers.
There has been talk that Ferdinand is finally ready to commit his long-term future to the club, although whether that alone will silence the boo-boys is open to question.
One man who will look forward to the Debrecen encounter in a more cheery mood than he might is Ruud van Nistelrooy, who scored a first-half hat-trick to banish the misery of his barren Far East tour.
The usually prolific Dutchman, who endured the worst season of his United career last term, took just 11 minutes to find the target, tapping home a Ronaldo cross from close range.
Van Nistelrooy then smashed home a penalty before sealing his second three-timer of the Red Devils' pre-season programme with a well-struck free-kick which flicked in off an Antwerp defender.
'Ruud's overall play in pre-season has been really good,' said Ferguson.
'He got in behind the Antwerp defence two or three times today, which was good news.
'But we all know he is the type of person that goals are the most important thing in his life.
'When he is scoring, it is hard for him to stop.'
Van Nistelrooy's well-being further quells talk of a move for Michael Owen.
Ferguson has resisted the temptation to talk about the subject but United officials continue to insist no move for the England striker is imminent, even though his agent Tony Stephens met Old Trafford chief executive David Gill yesterday on separate business.
Paul Scholes, Ronaldo and Darren Fletcher were also on the scoresheet, with skipper Roy Keane completing his first 90 minutes since being omitted from the Far East tour squad because of a hamstring injury.
'Roy got through the full 90 minutes, which was the most important thing. He didn't flag at any stage and I thought he coped with it very well,' Ferguson added.
