OPTA PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Following an impressive five-goal spree, Manchester United’s Ruud van Nistelrooy is Opta’s Player of the Month for December.
The Dutch goalsmith socred a single goal in five of the Red Devils seven December games to bring his total for the season to a goal-chart topping 15. Indeed, van Nisterlrooy spent the final month of 2005 peppering the opposition goal with shots, with no other player firing in more than the Dutch international’s haul of 14 accurate shots on target. The United star also had nine attempts on goal saved by the opposition ‘keeper, a higher total than any other player in the top tier.
Taking the runners-up spot is Liverpool’s totemic midfielder Steven Gerrard. The England schemer struck twice last month and provided the thrust behind the Merseysider’s superb December which saw Rafa Benitez’s side win all five of their games, conceding only one goal in the process.
As well as pitching in with some vital goals, Gerrard was also Liverpool’s most potent creative force, setting up an impressive 15 goal-scoring chances for his team-mates, a figure only Wayne Rooney could better in the top tier. While the inspirational midfielder also set off on 20 dribbles, more than any other Liverpool player.
Completing the trio is Chelsea captain John Terry. The England defender started the month in match-winning form, hitting both winners against Middlesbrough and Wigan Atheltic. However, as well as providing a goal threat for the Blues, Terry’s distribution was also highly impressive, with the home-grown star finding a team-mate with 262 accurate passes, the fourth-best total in the Premiership and the highest by far of any defender.
At the other end of the pitch, the tough-tackling centre-half was also at his rock-solid best, helping the Blues keep five clean sheets in their six December games. Terry made more clearances (72) and blocked more shots (6) than any other Chelsea |
