Scholes misses Burton tie, Smith returns
Team News: Scholes Out, Smith Back
Paul Scholes will sit out United's FA Cup trip to Burton Albion on Sunday but Alan Smith is fit to play.
Scholes has not featured since sustaining a blow to the head in the 2-2 draw at Birmingham nine days ago.
Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the 31-year-old is still feeling the effects of concussion and will not be considered for the third round clash, however, Smith has recovered from a chest infection and is available for selection.
"Scholesy is still suffering a bit from concussion and blurred vision," Fergie told ManUtd.com. "It hasn't eased up so he won't be risked on Sunday and it's difficult to say when he'll be fit to play again.
"He's certainly a lot better than he was but it's a matter of letting it ease away.
"Smith is fit and he'll play," added the United manager. "The rest of the squad are all fit but I'll be making changes.
"You have to work hard to get through these types of games because anything can happen."
Sir Alex Ferguson
"It'll be a strong side; the likes of Saha, Solskjaer, Park, Ronaldo, Brown, Bardsley, Silvestre and Howard will all play.
"It's not a matter of taking risks, it's about using your squad because four games in eight days has taken its toll on every squad in the country. The freshness will help us."
Ahead of the clash, Burton have been forced to draft in specialist pitch advisors in a bid to ensure the game is not affected by any inclement weather.
Eighty tons of sand were piled onto the pitch top to combat drainage problems, while a special inflatable dome will be used overnight to avert further damage and protect what little grass remains over the next two days.
"The pitch wasn't particularly good the night we played them in the friendly in November," recalled the United boss. "They were worried about it then, particularly the bit in front of the main stand.
"I've not seen it since then but I've read the stories about the sand which will help with the frost if it arrives; they're obviously very keen to get the game on.
"I remember going to Hereford in 1990 when their pitch was like an absolute quagmire - it didn't help that they had a bull running around the pitch before the game either! We also played Sheffield United in gale-force winds during another Cup tie in 1993.
"You get all different kinds of conditions in FA Cup ties and that's what adds to the romance of it all. You can expect Cup upsets because of it but we hope we're not part of those statistics on Sunday."
"Nigel Clough's done a fantastic job at Burton and he's got them playing good football."
Sir Alex Ferguson
United's last taste of action against non-league opposition came against Exeter City at the same stage of the competition last season.
Having been drawn at home to the Conference side, Fergie opted to field a second string team but things did not go according to plan. United produced one of their poorest performances of the season allowing Exeter to leave Old Trafford with a 0-0 draw.
The big guns returned for the replay and goals from Rooney and Ronaldo sealed a 2-0 victory for the Reds much to Fergie's relief.
"We perhaps played too many young players in the first match with Exeter," admitted the United manager.
"The biggest problem about playing them was the fact that they hadn't played for three weeks because Reserve team football shuts down just before Christmas for a break.
"It was a reminder of what Cup football is all about and you just can't take things for granted. The FA Cup always has a romance about it and it's had more romance for United than any other club because of the fact we've won it more times than anyone else. |
