Reds back in for Ballack?
The extracts on this page are taken from selected national newspapers. The views expressed here do not necessarily reflect the views of Manchester United.
Back To Ballack
Sir Alex Ferguson will be armed with a £10million kitty to solve Manchester United’s injury crisis. He has just seven days to plug the midfield gap after Paul Scholes was ruled out for the season with an eye problem while John O’Shea faces a six-week lay-off with broken ribs. Fergie is desperate for a quality central midfielder and Bayern Munich’s German international Michael Ballack, 29, tops the list. He is also tracking Real Madrid’s Thomas Gravesen with the 29-year-old Dane unsettled due to a lack of first-team opportunities. Fergie was given the go-ahead to plunge back into the transfer market by the Glazer family.
No Funds For Fergie
Sir Alex Ferguson has been told there is no cash available to solve his midfield crisis after Manchester United's season was rocked by the double loss of Paul Scholes and John O'Shea. Scholes has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a mysterious eye condition, while Irishman O'Shea will be unavailable for up to six weeks with a couple of broken ribs. But if Fergie hoped he could spend his way out of trouble with an emergency buy in the January transfer window, his hopes were immediately dashed when he was told there were no more funds.

Lyon Set On Taking Mik
Gerard Houllier has admitted he wants United's Mikael Silvestre to join him at French side Lyon - but not until the end of the season. The former Liverpool chief said: "He is a player who appeals to us because he can play centre-half or full-back. However, he has already played in the Champions League and we need people now who can play in that competition.

Scholes Fears End
Paul Scholes' career could be over because of a serious eye problem that has already ruled him out for the rest of the season. The Manchester United midfielder went to see a top Harley Street surgeon in London on Monday. He was told pressure behind one eye was the cause of the trouble and it would be dangerous to play football again until everything was sorted out. Even then, surgeons could tell him that future contact sport would be inadvisable.

Sparky's A Striker Light
Blackburn are threatened by their own Carling Cup injury crisis tonight. While United are short in midfield, Rovers boss Mark Hughes is crying out for strikers. Paul Dickov faces up to six weeks on the sidelines after dislocating a shoulder in Saturday's win at Newcastle. Craig Bellamy missed out on a return to the north-east because of a one-match ban, but a nagging hamstring problem makes the Welshman a doubt to face United. |
