Neville Won't Underestimate Carling Cup's Value
The League Cup is the only domestic honour missing from Gary Neville’s vast array of winners’ medals – and the United defender admits he’s “desperate to win the trophy” this year.
The United captain freely admits the trophy was not top of United’s agenda at the start of the season. But, having been beaten in the final in 2003 and only losing to the eventual winners, Chelsea, in the semis last season, United have not developed a sudden loyalty to the tournament as compensation.
United’s supporters are likely to make the most of the fact that it will be 30 years to the weekend (29 Feb, 1976) since Manchester City lifted their last piece of silverware; a 2-1 win over Newcastle earned them the League Cup trophy at Wembley.
Neville sees it as an opportunity to complete his set of personal honours in the English game, but more important than that, a chance for the younger members of the squad to make it the first of many trophies in their United careers.
“Everyone has been desperate to get to a final,” Neville said after captaining the Reds to a 3-2 aggregate win over Blackburn.
“It’ll mean a lot to me to win, not because I’m captain. It’s because I play for Manchester United and I want us to be winning trophies.
“I’ve been here a long time and I’m desperate to win that trophy. At the start of the season people will have said that it was low on our list of priorities. But it’s high on our list of priorities now and people can’t say we’ve been treating this competition with respect only this season. That’s not the case. We got to the semi final last season and got to the final in 2003.”
"Everyone has been desperate to get to a final. We've taken a lot of criticism recently and we have to stick together because we are going in the right direction."
Gary Neville
While some critics will choose to look upon a Carling Cup final place, rather than a genuine title challenge of Champions League final place, as a downgrading of United’s standards, Neville says it can be the first of many trophies for the younger members of the squad.
“We’ve taken a lot of criticism recently,” Neville said. “We beat Liverpool on Sunday – one of our biggest rivals – and there are still negative headlines. We don’t seem to be able to do right for wrong at the moment. We’ve got to stick together within the club. We’ve got to show our passion because we are going in the right direction.
“This is a big chance for us,” he added. “We’re growing as a team and this is a chance to get a winners’ medal. I know the confidence that medals bring. Lads like Rooney, Fletcher and Richardson deserve this chance.”
With the first leg of the tie poised precariously at 1-1, Ruud van Nistelrooy’s eighth minute opener at Old Trafford was the ideal start. But Blackburn pegged the Reds back in the 33rd minute through Steven Reid. It took a second half winner from Louis Saha to clinch a place in the final.
“Blackburn pushed us right until the end and made it very hard for us,” Neville acknowledged. “And Brad Friedel is incredible against us. I don’t see a lot of him in other games, but if he plays like every week… what a keeper.
“But I feel we created the better chances. We struggled a little bit after Ryan Giggs (hamstring) went off. We’ve been decimated by injuries in the centre of midfield. Even the temporary midfielders have been getting injured. So We had to stay strong and restrict them to a few long shots.
"I thought Blackburn were the better team in the first half. But I think we deserved to win overall and with the chances we created. I remember last year against Chelsea where we played some good football and lost, so the most important thing in a semi final is to win." |
