Prem giants join Caneira chase
Chelsea and Manchester United are both reportedly on the trail of Portuguese defender Marco Caneira.
The 27-year-old Valencia defender has spent the last six months on loan at Sporting Lisbon, who are keen to sign the player on a permanent basis.
Their hopes could be dashed if the reports emanating from Portugal about the interest from The Premiership's richest two clubs are to be believed.
Caneira, whose contract at Valencia does not run out until 2011, would battle with compatriots Paulo Ferriera and Ricardo Carvalho for a place in the first team if he chose Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are likely to want cover at full back and central defence - both positions Caneira can play - with the likely departure of William Gallas this summer and Jose Mourinho has always been happy to make use of his knowledge of Portuguese football to boost the depth of the Premiership champions' squad.
If he opted for a move to Old Trafford, he would join countrymen assistant manager Carlos Queiroz and Cristiano Ronaldo, both of whom he knows well from his time with the national squad.
"Caneira can move to Sporting or go elsewhere," Valencia sporting director Amadeo Carboni said. "With his long contract we would be looking for a significant offer though."
Sporting are keen to sign the player swiftly before the Premiership clubs can move in and to this end their supremo Pablo Barbosa met with Carboni on Friday in a bid to seal a swift transfer to the Portuguese outfit.
"Things are sufficiently clear, Caneira can come to Sporting, either on loan again or on a permanent basis," Barbosa said.
"Caneira has already become an important member of our team. We will find out soon whether we can sign him again."
Caneira is a member of Portugal's 2006 World Cup squad, but is likely to act only as cover. |
