RONALDO: I'LL FACE THE MOB
'I have no reason to leave United'
CRISTIANO RONALDO last night made a sensational U-turn and claimed he is ready to face the Premiership fans and return to Manchester United.
The Portugal winger said: "I have no reason to leave the club. There are possibilities for me to continue at Manchester United."
Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson, in a statement, told Ronaldo he has no chance of quitting Old Trafford - before preparing a £34million double swoop for Spain World Cup striker Fernando Torres and Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick. The United statement read: "There is no possibility of Cristiano being sold. Cristiano recently signed a new contract until 2010 and the club fully expects him to honour it.

"The club will not listen to any offers for Cristiano. He is one of the brightest young stars in world football as demonstrated by his performances at the World Cup and Manchester United is not in the business of selling its best young players."
Ronaldo made himself Public Enemy No.1 during the World Cup for his part in getting Old Trafford team-mate Wayne Rooney sent off.
He then claimed he was desperate to leave Old Trafford and move to Real Madrid after attacking Ferguson for not supporting him.
But United moved yesterday to insist they will not sell Ronaldo and Ferguson is determined to strengthen his squad with an ambitious double swoop for Torres and Carrick.
That came as Ronaldo, now on holiday in Madeira, opened the door for the first time to the possibility of staying at United even after his Manchester home was attacked in the wake of his World Cup bust-up.
Ronaldo, 21, said: "Everything is open. If it is a question of staying it will be fine, if I leave it will also be fine.
"I have no reason to leave the club. They have always supported me, they always gave me guarantees of being able to evolve as a player.
"There are possibilities for me to continue at United but there are other possibilities as well. There is still nothing concrete."
United chief executive David Gill and the player's agent Jorge Mendes are now due to meet in the next 24 hours.
Ronaldo's uncertain future has left Ferguson facing one of the biggest tests of his reign with striker Ruud van Nistelrooy also set to leave.
But United are now determined to back their manager financially to ensure that they do not lose ground on champions Chelsea.
Ferguson has targeted Atletico Madrid star Torres. The player wants to join AC Milan but United may steal their man if the Italian giants are relegated later this week for their part in the Serie A matchfixing scandal.
United have also been chasing Tottenham's England midfielder Carrick and hope to tie up a £14m deal next week after going back with an improved offer.
Ferguson believes Carrick can be the central midfielder that they have been searching for and Tottenham are now holding out for a bigger price after turning down an initial £10m offer. |
