Reds set for keeper swoop
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that United are on the verge of signing West Brom goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak.
Speaking upon arrival in Durban for the first leg of the Club's South Africa tour, Sir Alex confirmed that the 24-year-old Pole should become the Reds' first signing of the close season.
The Gaffer told a press conference: "We're possibly just about to tie up a deal for Tomasz Kuszczak from West Brom. He's got Premier division experience and he will be the number two to Edwin van der Sar.
"Edwin's got another year left on his contract but I think that Tomasz is a possibility depending on how he does. His form last year was superb.
"He's a terrific signing by us and I think by this time next year we'll be in a very strong position with goalkeepers, for one of the first times since Peter Schmeichel."
Ferguson also revealed that fellow goalkeeper Ben Foster is set to spend the coming season on loan at Watford, after playing a huge part in guiding them to the Premiership last term.
Despite confirming that Foster will spend another year away from Old Trafford, however, Ferguson is convinced that the 23-year-old has a long-term future at United.
Ben Foster is someone that everyone's very excited about," he said. "We signed him from Stoke City last season and farmed him out to Watford for the season, and eventually he was picked out as the fourth choice goalkeeper for England at the World Cup, which was a tremendous boost for the boy.
"He's got a great frame, is very very quick and a good fielder of the ball. We're very excited about him. When you think he's only 23 years of age, we think he's a promising prospect." |
