More player loans planned
Many of United’s young players can expect to spend some, if not all, of the 2006/07 season away from Old Trafford.
Over a dozen youngsters spent spells on loan at other clubs last season – to help their development – and Sir Alex has revealed that he intends to do likewise this term.
Therefore, some of those currently on first team duty in South Africa could well spend the season at another Premiership or football league club, or possibly at a European club.
“The loan system is working, without question,” says Sir Alex. “The Premier Reserve League is now more like a youth league. There’s now very few teams in the reserve league playing mature players; it’s all young players.
“So therefore, by putting them on loan you give them far more competitive football and also more physical football. And they come back, without question, much better.”
Sir Alex has already confirmed that goalkeeper Ben Foster will spend a second season at Watford after impressing last term and, speaking in Cape Town ahead of the game against the Kaizer Chiefs, revealed that Jonny Evans and Gerard Pique will be the next to go on season loans.
"The test comes in a couple of ways [for young players]: their temperament to play in the first team and getting a maturity in their game that allows us to play them with confidence. That’s always going to be the test of young players at our club," he said.
“In the game against the Orlando Pirates we saw that in Phil Bardsley. Phil has been playing in the first team squad for two or three years but he’s still just turned 21 in July. He is showing maturity and that’s the kind of thing I like to see coming from young players.
“You can’t all of a sudden have a young player that doesn’t make mistakes. Therefore most players who have come through over the years, when they’re younger like Ryan Giggs, are midfielders or forwards.
“They get in our team much younger than defenders. Defenders really need a lot of experience in our league.
“So I think that Jonny Evans will go on a year loan and come back a better player, as we’re hoping with Gerard Pique who will also go on a year loan. We did it with John O’Shea to Antwerp and Bournemouth and he came back a better player.
“They’ve definitely got great potential but as with anyone attached to the club it’s about realising that potential and making sure they become first team footballers.”
Last season's loans certainly provided an acid test for United's youngsters. Those who shone, such as David Jones and Ben Foster, have given themselves a chance of forging careers at Old Trafford. Sir Alex will be hoping that more players follow their example and grasp their opportunities this season. |
