West Ham swoop for Argentina's star duo
Argentina striker Carlos Tevez and his teammate Javier Mascherano, standouts at the World Cup in Germany this year, have agreed to join West Ham.
The Corinthians pair were in London for talks with Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea, British newspapers had reported. However, the 22-year-olds will spurn a move to the three Premiership giants to move to West Ham.
"Carlitos Tevez, along with his ex-Corinthians teammate Javier Mascherano, sign a contract to play for West Ham United of England," said Tevez's personal website, which also showed the West Ham badge superimposed alongside a picture of the forward.
Tevez several weeks ago indicated he had played his last game for Brazilian side Corinthians, and his move to England appears to have been smoothed by the fact that both his and Mascherano's rights are owned by Media Sports Investment, a British company with financial involvement in Corinthians. MSI was linked with a takeover of the Hammers last season.
Tevez and defensive midfielder Mascherano were among Argentina's most impressive performers at the World Cup as the South Americans cruised through their group - beating Serbia & Montenegro 6-0 in one match - before falling on penalty kicks to host Germany at the quarter-final stage.
One of several Argentine forwards to be labelled "the new Diego Maradona", Tevez helped his nation claim gold at the 2004 Olympics, scoring eight goals in six matches. In December 2004, he joined Corinthians from Boca Juniors for US$20 million.
Mascherano and Tevez are in London for Argentina's exhibition on Sunday with Brazil at Arsenal's Emirates stadium.
Meanwhile, former Manchester United striker Andy Cole joined Portsmouth after surprising Manchester City by asking to leave. the Guardian said.
