actually if the bullet is fired straight up, it reaches the point where all the energy is used and when it comes down it's only the bullet's natural terminal velocity. Which isn't all that much, it probably wouldn't even puncture your skin.

However, if you fire a bullet at an angle, the bullet will retain deadly velocity and kill someone. If you watch the Mythbusters' episode about bullets, you'd get a better explanation, since they used an example similar to this one. |
