This is the Mitsubishi ASX compact crossover, a Nissan QashqaiandHyundai iX35 rival which will be unveiled at the Geneva motor showinMarch.
The ASX is European-spec version of the all-new JapaneseRVR. Thefive-seater is slated to go on sale in Japan from February2010 and theUK this summer.
At4300mm long it’s slightly shorter than a Qashqai or a Focus. It’sbasedon the same platform as the Lancer, and should be availablewithfour-wheel drive.
The best-selling engine is expected to be anall-new Euro 5-compliant1.8-litre turbocharged direct-injection dieselwith stop-starttechnology, which will be linked to a six-speed gearbox.
TheASX was originally show as the cX concept in 2008, but theproductioncar is far more conventional than the show car. Nevertheless,itretains some of the concept’s detailing, such as the sharpcreaserunning from the front wings into the rear doors.
The ASX is partof the firm’s plan to move away from the image of amanufacturer of bigSUVs as it repositions itself as a maker of smaller,more efficientcars.
