蘋果電腦正式宣布將在明年中開始提供使用英特爾處理器的Mac電腦，07年底全部轉用英特爾處理器。

蘋果行政總裁喬布斯在一個軟件開發者大會上表示，蘋果將從2006年6月開始銷售基於英特爾處理器的低階Mac電腦，到2007年底所有的蘋果電腦產品都將轉向英特爾處理器。

喬布斯說：“我們的目標是為客戶提供全世界最好的個人電腦，而英特爾未來將開發出最強大的處理器產品。我們轉到PowerPC架構已經有十年的時間，我相信未來十年內英特爾技術將幫助我們打造最好的個人電腦。”

Mac軟件的開發商將需重新編寫軟件，以符合硬體的傳變。

從1981年開始，蘋果就一直採用不同於大多數PC廠商的架構，並籍此在全球PC市場佔據一席之地。最終，蘋果終於向主流妥協，開始採用英特爾處理器，同時也放棄了從上世紀90年代初開始同IBM和摩托羅拉共同開發的Power PC處理器。

Steve Jobs is scared of the slowness of the IBM.....but now no one will buy the Apple machines for a couple of years (until the Intel-Mac) comes out! How's the company going to survive? On ipod only?

So sad man...the end of PPC.

What's the new machine going to be named? Macintel? InteMac?

I will stick with my G5 until the dust settles.

可能Apple 開始發覺自己市場佔有律唔夠高

Not really. Windows PC has been using Intel/AMD for years now and it would not change at all. The big change is Mac used to boast about the PPC on the speed compare to Intel/AMD. This move by Steve Jobs is a direct challenge to Microsoft. Now they are using the same hardware (more or less), the competition would be on the platform (the software, namely the OS).

Even with the reported bugs out there, Tiger (the new OS) is still very good as a OS. If Longhorn does measure up to Tiger....Microsoft is in big trouble...not because people would switch to Mac, but the software developers could move away.
