Papers: Carrick set for move
Carrick Crunch
Michael Carrick is stalling on a bumper new £45,000-a-week deal to stay at Spurs. The England midfielder wants to wait and see if Manchester United come back with a new bid. Spurs KO’d United’s £14million offer and want to open talks to secure Carrick’s long-term future. Carrick - who is 25 on Friday - has two years left on the £25,000-a-week deal he signed after his £2.75m move from West Ham in August 2004. Carrick is still eager to try his luck at United but fears Spurs’ £20m valuation has put them off.

Other tabloids aren't convinced, however, with the Daily Mirror among those claiming that Carrick will stay in London because of United's reluctance to pay Spurs' asking price.
If Carrick does arrive, he may be followed up north by Spurs team-mate Jermaine Defoe, according to the Daily Star, following the news that Fernando Torres is staying with Atletico Madrid.
The Sun also reports Sir Alex Ferguson's surprise and delight to see Alan Smith back in training after his horrific injury. Meanwhile, Ruud van Nistelrooy may turn out for United in Thursday's friendly at Hyde United. |
