Active:
The speaker does not need a ampifier, it has a ampifier build it so all it need is a power (electricity)

Passive:
It need a ampifier to make sound.  You cannot just connect it to your sound card. Also, you cannot connect it to the power outlet on the wall

If you have volumn control on the speaker, it is very likley that it is active.
