well, i think if count total population then of coz unrealistic~
but i do think US was doing a good job in this olympic, regardless the mistakes in relays~
they got one more gold medal then in athens!
they did well in team sports: gold medals in men and women basketball, men volleyball, women football, and some silver and bronze as well...
also they still lead in swimming and atheletics, which all these reflect the real sports level of the country!

and for those team sports they played about 6-7 games (or even more) to get the gold, many efforts by many persons, but count one gold medal only, which is pretty unfair too!
so i did some stats for no. of medalists (e.g. 5 for basketball; 11 for football exlcuing the bench already), then i found that US hv more medalists headcount in all gold, silver and bronze.
this just reveals more exact sports power~

i dun mean to deject China's top position in the medal table, but the no. solely is not a real reflection actually!
