Man Utd v Everton: PreviewPA
Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz is convinced his club are destined for great things this season despite their shambolic European exit.
United's plush Trafford Training Centre has been a sombre place over the last few days while the Red Devils have been coming to terms with their midweek defeat in Lisbon.
The loss to Benfica not only consigned United to an exclusive diet of domestic combat for the remainder of the season but also led to sustained calls for Sir Alex Ferguson's 19-year stint as manager to be brought to an end in the summer.
As Ferguson's trusted assistant, Queiroz has also come under fire as well as some senior players, but the former Real Madrid coach is adamant United can still emerge from the turmoil and prove they are winners.
Ahead of the home Premiership match against Everton in which the team will try to erase some of their pain, Queiroz said: ``We are disappointed about what happened in the Champions League but we are still in a position to fight for three major trophies.
``We are second in the Premiership, into the last eight of the Carling Cup and have the FA Cup still to come. Under those circumstances, why shouldn't we still trust and believe in our players?
``We are performing well, the team is progressing and we trust the quality of our preparation.
``This is not a time for talking or finding explanations or excuses. It is time to move forward and deliver.
``But I feel we have reasons which make us confident that by the end of the season this will still have been a great one for us.''
James McFadden hopes he has proved his point and that he will continue as a central striker for Everton at Old Trafford.
The Scot has made no secret of the fact he dislikes playing wide - as he has had to do for most of his time at Goodison Park - despite being a front man for his country.
But McFadden scored his first goal of the season in the win at Blackburn last weekend, showing pace and movement which will have impressed manager David Moyes.
McFadden said: ``I'd like to think I've earned my place in the team now. I had been banging a few goals past Nigel Martyn in training and I've been working hard trying to get in. Hopefully I've been doing well in the matches.
``Now I want to push on and get that extra spark. Last season I scored at Tottenham and went on a bit of a run and hopefully this time I won't get injured and can stay in the team a bit longer.'' |
