Liverpool have reportedly made an approach to Spanish giants Barcelona for their out of favour striker Henrik Larsson in the hope of taking the player on loan until the end of the season.

Reports in Spain claim that Liverpool assistant manager Pako Ayesteran spent last week talking to contacts of his at the Nou Camp to see if Barca would be prepared to allow the 34-year-old to move to Anfield for the second half of the season.

The former Celtic hitman is out of contract in the summer and his 176 goals in 222 games is certainly an attractive stat. Rafa is in the market for a striker but signing one in January on a permanent basis could prove tricky so a loan deal could be an option.

It is claimed that although Larsson is frustrated at the lack of action, he isn't keen on a switch to England as he wants to return to his homeland.

His agent Ron Jansen has indicated that Liverpool and other British clubs could be wasting their time trying to sign him even though Larsson has only been offered a one-year contract extension by Barcelona.

Jansen said: "Clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham want to sign Henrik but he does not want to play in England. He would like to play for Barcelona but competition for places is difficult. He wants to take his family home for his final playing days."
