Can’t buy a striker to save our lives, 1991 - 2006
A top class centre forward should be arriving at Anfield this summer, so an ideal chance to look back over our recent history with regards to buying a front man.
We have been very fortunate with strikers, we already had Rushie, who came back from Juventus and after a season of finding his feet in the old first division, carried on pretty much where he had left off . Then just as Rushie’s career was coming to an end, Robbie Fowler emerged and carried on the mantle of great Liverpool goalscorers. In 1997, Michael Owen burst into the team, taking the world cup by storm in 98' and banging the goals in for the reds, he like Robbie, was a home grown player who cost us nothing. When you look at the strikers we have bought during this era, often for record fees, it makes for sobering reading;
Dean Saunders – British record fee £2.9 million – played just over a season, scored lots of goals against inferior European opposition (14 i think), but was basically not good enough due to a bad touch and out of date perm – failure.
Stan Collymore – British record fee £8.5 million – two seasons, first season he looked like a decent foil for Robbie, indeed they scored something like 55 goals between them in 1995-1996, but he had a suspect temperament and didn’t get on with a lot of the payers, especially Tony Warner and Steve Harkness. He couldn’t be arsed playing for the reserves either - all in all, a failure
Emile Heskey – LFC record signing £11 million – after a tremendous first season, when he scored 24? goals, he went backwards. Seemed to lack confidence and wasn’t helped by being played out of position and went down far too easily for a big fella. Unforgivable miss versus Man Utd at Anfield sealed his fate as far as I was concerned. 66 goals in about 300 games, not good enough for the money he cost, especially when you consider that Henry was bought around the same time for a similar amount - failure.
El Hadji Duoif - £10million or thereabouts – had a good world cup in 2002, scoring no goals, was bought as some final piece of the jigsaw by Houllier. A filter-037 disgrace of a player and a man, and winner of worst signing in our history, an embarrassment - failure
Djibril Cisse – LFC club record signing £14 million – came with a massive reputation, and was the main story on the back of the echo for about 3 years. Never have I been as excited about a signing as I was about Djibril. Early doubts about touch and awareness were forgotten about after he suffered a horrendous injury at the LFC pet cemetery that is Ewood Park. Battled back amazingly, and came back to score a pen in the Champions league final. However, early doubts about his touch etc were raised again during the last season, the debate about his merits has been done to death but he appears to have played his last game for us, (which was as a goalscorer in a cup final). For the money he cost, £14 million which sounds absolutely obscene now, he has to be classed as a failure.
Fernando Morientes - £6million – again a very exciting signing, but too many auditions as Claude Reins in a red shirt have meant that Nando is probably out the door this summer, a player of undoubted talent, just not able to show it in England - failure
Peter Crouch – £7 million – Had a good first season for the reds, improving the team and helping us away from home with his physical presence, has a few assists and a respectable enough goals return for his first season. For me, he probably needs to score more goals but could well prove to be a good foil for a top class forward.
That is a hell of a lot of money squandered. It goes without saying that Rafa needs to beak the mould of moden LFC history when he buys a striker this summer. Whoever he gets in (and assuming we lose Cisse and Nando over the coming months and recoup some money for them) will have to settle pretty much straight away and do what no other expensive LFC striker has done in 15 years, that is be an undoubted success. |
